Sirnat National Park: A breath of fresh air near Phuket’s International Airport

Nestled in the far northwest of Phuket, Sirinat National Park is a tranquil coastal reserve with stunning stretches of sand, rich marine life, and a surprising backstory. Originally founded in 1981 as Nai Yang National Park, it was renamed in 1992 to honor Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday. Today, the park spans over 90 km²—75% of which is sea—and includes four beautiful beaches: Mai Khao, Sai Kaew, Nai Yang, and Nai Thon Beach.

How to get to Sirinat National Park in Phuket?

Sirinat National Park is only a 15-minute drive from Phuket International Airport, making it one of the most accessible nature escapes in Phuket. From Patong, Kata, or Karon, it takes about 45–60 minutes. From Phuket Town, the journey is around 45 minutes by car via Route 402 and 4031.

Nature, wildlife & clean-up efforts

Despite being a national park, Sirinat is not always spotless. Due to ocean currents, plastic and debris often wash ashore. Fortunately, local businesses and eco-initiatives regularly clean up the park. The coastal pine forests and mangrove swamps host vibrant flora, and the park is home to 125 bird species, monitor lizards, and the occasional snake. Offshore, coral reefs teem with tropical fish, especially near Nai Yang Beach.

Turtle nesting season in Sirinat National Park

Between November and February, endangered leatherback and hawksbill turtles return to the beaches of Sirinat to lay their eggs. Conservation efforts by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation are helping safeguard these fragile populations. In 2020, a turtle laid eggs at Nai Thon Beach—an encouraging sign of recovery.

Stray dogs

Stray dogs often nap in the shade near the beaches. While most are friendly, it’s good to be cautious—especially with young children. Support initiatives like the Soi Dog Foundation, which does incredible work helping street animals in Thailand.

Snorkeling and marine life

Snorkeling is best near Nai Yang Beach, where soft and hard corals attract schools of colorful fish. The ocean here forms a large part of the park and provides habitat for diverse marine life.

Main Entrance & Entry Fees

The main entrance is located in north Nai Yang Beach, where you’ll find the visitor center and park HQ. The park is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.

You can explore the park by foot, bicycle, scooter, or car. The main road runs through the coastal pine forest, with spots to park and walk to the beaches.

From Patong/Kata/Karon/Phuket Town: Around 45–60 minutes by car or taxi.
From Phuket International Airport: Just a few minutes away.
Best route: Take road 402 north, then exit on 4031 toward the airport.
To reach the northern part: Stay on road 402 and follow signs to Mai Khao.
