The Sarasin Bridge stands as a testament to Phuket’s evolution, intertwining tales of love, resilience, and progress. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a romantic, or a traveler seeking picturesque views, the bridge offers a profound experience that resonates with all who visit.
Sarasin Bridge: The connection between Phuket and the mainland
The Sarasin Bridge, completed in 1967, was the first structure to connect Phuket Island to Thailand’s mainland, marking a significant milestone in the region’s development. Named after Pote Sarasin, a former Thai Prime Minister, the 660-meter bridge facilitated easier travel and trade, replacing the previously unreliable ferry services.
The Sarasin Bridge is located in southern Thailand, connecting Phuket Island to the mainland province of Phang Nga. It spans the Prak Pah Strait, linking Ban Tha Chatchai in Phuket’s Thalang District to Ban Tha Nun in Phang Nga’s Takua Thung District.
The Sarasin Bridge is the gateway from popular tourist destinations like Khao Lak and Phang Nga to Phuket.

The New Chapter: Thao Thep Krasattri Bridge – Thao Sri Sunthorn Bridge
As traffic increased and the original bridge aged, a new, more robust structure was necessary. In 2011, the Thao Thep Krasattri – Thao Sri Sunthorn Bridge was inaugurated, featuring a four-lane road to accommodate the growing number of vehicles. This bridge honors two heroic sisters who defended Phuket from Burmese invaders in 1785.

A Symbol of Tragic Love: The Tale of Gew and Dam
Beyond its structural significance, the Sarasin Bridge is etched in local lore due to a poignant love story. In 1973, Dam Saetan, a humble bus driver, and Kanchana “Gew” Sae-ngo, a student from a wealthy family, faced insurmountable opposition to their relationship. Forbidden from being together, they bound themselves and leapt from the bridge into the sea, choosing eternal unity over separation. Their story was immortalized in the 1987 Thai film “Saphan Rak Sarasin” (The Bridge of Love).
Do you know?
These days, couples in love—like Chrystal and Jurg (see photo below)—regularly stroll across the Sarasin Bridge. Local legend has it: if you and your partner can cross the entire span while holding your breath, you may make a wish together—and it just might come true. No partner? No problem! If you manage the crossing solo, breath held all the way, your wish still counts.
