Mai Khao Beach: Where the planes fly just above your head
Bang Niang Beach is a lovely long sandy beach in Khao Lak. The water is warm and perfect for swimming. Bang Niang is together with Nang Thong Beach one of the most popular beach destinations in Khao Lak. Yet there are still quiet stretches of beach next to the cozy restaurants and resorts. The beach is therefore also popular among couples and families who want to relax.

Where in Phuket is Mai Khao Beach?
Mai Khao Beach lies in the far north of Phuket, right next to Phuket International Airport (HKT). It’s about a 1-hour drive from Patong, Kata, Karon, or Phuket Town. The beach stretches for nearly 10 kilometres, making it the longest beach on Phuket.
What makes Mai Khao Beach so special?
Unlike the lively beaches in the south, Mai Khao is calm, clean, and often deserted. You could easily find yourself enjoying a huge stretch of beach all to yourself. Locals also call it Haad Mai Khao, and the northern tip is sometimes referred to as Hat Sai Khao.
The sand is coarser than on southern beaches, and the beach is not ideal for snorkeling due to deep waters and limited coral. But what it lacks in classic beauty, it makes up for in authentic charm and tranquility.

When to swim at Mai Khao Beach?
The best time to swim at Mai Khao Beach is during the dry season (November to February), when the sea is calm and clear. However, between May and October, strong currents and high waves during the monsoon season can make swimming dangerous. Always check the beach safety flags and follow local recommendations before entering the water.

Just be cautious—taking photos on the beach under flight paths is allowed, but climbing fences or entering restricted zones is not. Always respect local safety rules.
