Kalim Beach might not offer powder-soft sands or ideal swimming conditions, but it excels in tranquility, high-end dining, and location. Just far enough from Patong’s crowds, it’s a great spot to relax, enjoy world-class cuisine, and catch a breathtaking sunset—making Kalim a hidden gem for in-the-know travelers.
Kalim Beach: Patong’s tranquil northern neighbour and home of Phuket’s best Italian restaurant
Kalim Beach is a coastal stretch located just north of Patong Beach on Phuket’s west coast. Often mistaken as part of Patong due to its proximity, Kalim offers a quieter alternative, easily accessible with a 15-minute walk from Patong’s northern end. The beach features a rocky shoreline and coral reefs, making it less suitable for swimming but ideal for surfing during the monsoon season (May to October).
While Kalim Beach may not boast the soft sands typical of Phuket’s more popular beaches, it compensates with its serene atmosphere and stunning sunset views. The area is renowned for its culinary scene, housing some of Phuket’s finest dining establishments.

Kalim Beach is known for its tranquil atmosphere, ideal for relaxation away from crowded tourist spots. It’s also popular among surfers during the monsoon season (May to October). Kalim might not win beauty awards—its rocky and coral-filled seabed makes swimming difficult—but its calm vibe, spectacular sunsets (known locally as Hat Kalim), and convenient location make it a favorite among those looking to escape the chaos without being too far.
Besides that Kalim is home to Aqua Restaurant, Phuket’s best Italian orientated fine dining establishment.
Kalim Beach features coarse sand and many rocky outcrops. While swimming is not ideal due to rocks and dead coral, it’s a great spot for sunbathing and beachcombing. You can also enjoy sunset photography or stroll the quiet stretch parallel to the road. Heading north from Kalim brings you to Nakalay, Yae, Hua, and Rayee Beaches, ending at Kamala.

The sea at Kalim Beach
The sea at Kalim Beach has a rocky seabed and coral reefs, making it unsuitable for casual swimming. However, during the rainy season, surfers from all over flock here to catch challenging waves. At low tide, rock pools emerge—perfect for spotting marine life.
From Patong Beach, Kalim Beach is a short drive or a 15-minute walk along the coastal road. Taxis and tuk-tuks are easily available. Coming from Kamala, Kalim is also easily accessible by motorbike or car within 10–15 minutes.
