Wat Tham Tapan: Heaven and Hell Temple in Phang Nga Town

Wat Tham Tapan, located in Phang Nga Town, is one of southern Thailand’s most unique and enigmatic temples. Known as the ‘Heaven and Hell Temple,’ it offers visitors a vivid journey through Buddhist interpretations of the afterlife. Upon arrival, you’re greeted by the open mouth of a massive dragon sculpture, symbolizing the entrance to this spiritual realm. Inside, the temple grounds feature graphic depictions of both heavenly bliss and hellish torment, designed to convey moral lessons about karma and consequence. This thought-provoking site provides a profound insight into Thai Buddhist culture and beliefs.

Wat Tham Tapan: Explore the Eerie Buddhist Hell Temple of Phang Nga

On the outskirts of Phang Nga Town you’ll find the temple Wat Tham Tapan. This special, somewhat lugubrious dilapidated temple. It’s full of scary looking statues and figures that are tortured in all kinds of bizarre ways. The complex depicts the Buddhist hell, Na Rok. To enter the temple you have to go through the mouth and body of an impressive dragon. To prevent yourself from ever ending up there, you must keep the five commandments. Thou shalt not: (1) kill, (2) steal, (3) lie, (4) be drunk and (5) commit adultery.

Another little temple down there

Luckily it’s not all doom and gloom and there is also a steep staircase that will take you to a little temple. From here on top you have a great view over Phang Nga Town. This temple is possibly less suitable for young children because of the statues.
