Tiger Cave Temple: What comes up, most come down.

The Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi Town is not for the faint-hearted—but it’s absolutely worth the challenge! To reach the crown jewel of this temple complex, you’ll need to conquer 1,256 steps. These steps aren’t just steep—they’re uneven, sometimes towering 30 centimeters high, and sure to leave your legs shaking. Muscle aches are likely if you’re not used to intense climbs, but don’t worry—there are markers along the way showing your progress, and most people take breaks (and selfies!) on the way up.

What makes the climb enjoyable is the atmosphere: people cheer each other on, strangers become friends, and encouragement flows freely from those already on their way back. Give yourself around an hour for the climb—unless you’re aiming to beat the current record of 9 minutes and 20 seconds. Going down will take the same time, we found this harder than going up as we really felt it in our legs. Nevertheless, a visit to this temple in Krabi was a real adventures and something we didnt want to miss out. (good luck!, chock dee in Thai).

Where in Krabi is the Tiger Cave Temple located?

The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) is located about 9 kilometers northeast of Krabi Town in southern Thailand, near the start of the Khao Phanom Mountain Range. It’s easily accessible by scooter, taxi, or local Songthaew from both Krabi Town and Ao Nang.

Dress code at the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi

Dress respectfully. Shorts are okay, but shoulders must be covered. Avoid see-through clothing. Sarongs are available to rent at the base. At the summit, shoes must be removed before stepping onto the tiled temple area up stairs.

Why is it called the Tiger Cave Temple?

Tiger Cave Temple in Thai is pronounced Wat Tum Sua. The name originates from a cave in the area where a large tiger was said to have lived. Locals heard its roar echoing through the forest and occasionally saw it sunbathing near the entrance. A natural rock formation in the cave also resembles a tiger’s paw print.

In 1975, revered monk Ajahn Jamnian Seelasettho and his disciples settled here to meditate, turning the cave and surrounding forest into a Dharma practice center. The tiger retreated inland and was never seen again.

Tips for the climb

Bring water (minimum of one liter), a towel, sunscreen, and maybe a flashlight if visiting around sunset. Be aware: there’s no lighting on the steps after dark. Climbing in the cooler hours (early morning or late afternoon) is ideal. Don’t forget a change of clothes—you’ll sweat through whatever you wear.

Climbed all 1256 stairs? What to expect at the summit

At the top—280 meters above sea level—you’ll find a majestic golden Buddha statue and a sacred Buddha footprint. The panoramic views are incredible: green forests, limestone cliffs, and glimpses of the Andaman Sea. It’s often breezy, and there’s a tap with cool filtered water.

Going down requires as much focus as going up—especially with shaky legs—so take your time and enjoy the way back. Don’t forget to encourage the people who started their climb up.

Warning, wildlife!

Expect to see monkeys—especially macaques—at the base of the stairs. Keep food and valuables zipped away. Don’t stare into their eyes or show your teeth, as this can provoke aggression. Also, snakes occasionally appear on the steps and trails, so tread carefully.

Visiting Wonderland

Not up for the climb? Wonderland, the temple’s foothills area, offers a tranquil alternative. This jungle setting is home to monks, caves, ancient trees, and a peaceful walking path with limestoan rocks beside you. With about 187 steps, it’s a great option for those with young kids or limited mobility.

Inside Wonderland, you’ll find the original Tiger Cave, monk dwellings, and even meditation caves. It’s quieter and cooler here, especially after 16:00 when the cicadas start singing.

Amulets, temple souvenirs and donations

At the base temple, you can browse counters offering authentic Thai Buddhist amulets and sacred bracelets. Many are handcrafted at the temple and blessed by monks, including some created by Ajahn Jamnian himself. You can also just donate some money as a gesture of respect.

Parking is free, but there’s a 50 THB entrance fee.

Tours Tiger Cave Temple

Instead of visiting the Tiger Cave Temple on your own, you can also join tours if you want to see as much as possible in one day. These tours are often combined with the Emerald Pool and the hot springs. Just make sure to check in advance how much time you’ll have at the Tiger Cave Temple if you plan to climb all the way to the top. Sometimes the stops are too short, unless you’re a top athlete.

Tip

Before heading the climb make a stop at Kanom Krok Tam Sue for the best Kanom Krok (kind off Thai mini coconut pancakes). We lived in the area and these are the best in Krabi!

Additional Facilities

Cold showers and restrooms are available at the base.
There’s a small food and drink stall near the entrance.
Dogs roam the area; be cautious, especially at night.

Tip

Want to catch a magical sunset or meditate at the summit? Arrive late afternoon—but don’t forget a flashlight for the way down!

Getting to the Tiger Cave Temple

From Ao Nang: It’s about 30 minutes (23 km) by taxi or Grab/Bolt. Fares range from 500–600 Baht one way, or 1,000 Baht round trip.
From Krabi Town: Take a Songthaew (shared mini-bus) from designated stops—one is on Utarakit Road near the River View Hotel. The ride costs about 50 Baht per person and takes 15–20 minutes.
Taxi: Expect to pay 200–250 Baht one way from Krabi Town.
Scooter Rental: About 300 Baht per day.
