Monkey Spotting: Meet the real inhabitants of Railay

Railay isn’t just famous for its beaches and cliffs—it’s also home to two fascinating monkey species: the crab-eating macaque and the dusky leaf monkey. These wild locals add a touch of jungle charm to your visit and are often spotted along jungle paths, in the mangroves, or near Railay East.

The dusky leaf monkey, or spectacled monkey, is easy to recognize by its white eye rings and peaceful behavior. Their babies have bright orange fur, making them even more adorable. These monkeys mainly feed on young leaves, fruits, and seeds. In contrast, the crab-eating macaque is more curious and cheeky. They roam the mangroves looking for small sea creatures and love stealing food or belongings when tourists aren’t paying attention—so keep your bags zipped and snacks hidden!

While watching monkeys in the wild can be fun, always observe them from a distance. Feeding them is strictly prohibited and could result in a fine. The best times for monkey spotting are early morning or late afternoon, when the jungle paths are quieter and cooler. Just remember: you’re in their home, so be respectful and cautious.
