Ao Nang Beach: The busiest beach in Krabi province

Ao Nang Beach, located in Krabi Province, Thailand, is a dynamic blend of natural beauty and lively atmosphere. That said, Ao Nang can get extremely crowded during the high season (November to April), especially around sunset and on the central beach. Be prepared for a bustling scene, particularly if you’re visiting during peak holiday times.

Where in Krabi is Ao Nang located?

Ao Nang is a tourist coastal village situated approximately 20 kilometers from Krabi Town and around a 30-minute drive from Krabi International Airport. It’s a well-developed area that serves as a gateway to the Andaman Sea and nearby islands like Railay and the Phi Phi Islands.

What makes Ao Nang so special?

Ao Nang’s charm lies in the balance between comfort and adventure. The beach is flanked by dramatic limestone cliffs and small islands dotting the horizon—an enticing preview of the region’s natural wonders. The lively village has a vibrant mix of beachfront bars, international restaurants, boutique shops, massage parlors, and local street vendors. The beach and its “sand”

Ao Nang Beach stretches for about 1.5 kilometers and is covered in a mix of golden sand and crushed shells. While it’s not the soft white powder found on some other Thai beaches, its unique composition makes for interesting beachcombing—expect to find some beautiful, intact shells. The central section of the beach, where most longtail boats dock, is not ideal for swimming due to the traffic and noise. However, the sunsets here are absolutely stunning, and the beach is perfect for a relaxed evening walk.

The most beautiful part of Ao Nang Beach

For a quieter and more scenic experience, head to the east side of Ao Nang Beach. This area, home to resorts like Phra Nang Inn Hotel, has fewer boats and more shade from trees. The narrower boulevard brings you closer to the sand, giving it more of an intimate, beach-holiday vibe. There are also many small massage parlours here—perfect for unwinding as you gaze out at the Andaman Sea. Keep walking further and you’ll arrive at Pai Plong Beach, a hidden stretch of sand surrounded by cliffs.

The sea at Ao Nang Beach at its swimming conditions

The sea is generally calm, especially during the dry season (November to April), making it great for swimming. The east side of Ao Nang Beach is especially good for a dip due to fewer boats. The sea gets gradually deeper, which is suitable for kids and inexperienced swimmers. Do take caution when swimming near the central area due to boat traffic.

How to get to Ao Nang in Krabi?

From Krabi Town: About 30 minutes by car or Songthaew (shared van). Songthaews cost around 50 Baht.

From Krabi Airport: Shared minivans charge approx. 150 Baht per person, private taxis or Grab/Bolt cost around 500 Baht.

By Longtail Boat: Ao Nang is also reachable by boat from Railay or nearby islands. From Railay it’s 100 Baht per person.

By Songthaew: A ride in a songthaew near Ao Nang costs 30 THB per person (for at least two people), or 60 THB if you’re riding solo. These minibuses travel back and forth along the main beach road. Just wave to flag one down and agree on the fare before hopping in.

From Ao Nang to Railay

One of the best reasons to stay in Ao Nang is its proximity to Railay—one of Thailand’s most stunning beaches. A 15-minute longtail boat ride gets you there easily. Tickets are available at shops along Ao Nang’s boulevard and cost 100 THB per person (one way).
