The Big Buddha Temple in Koh Samui: A Must-See 12-Meter Golden Statue

The Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) features an impressive 12-meter-high golden Buddha. The airport in Koh Samui is just a few kilometers away, so you might be able to see the Big Buddha from the airplane! The statue was constructed in 1972 to protect the people of Koh Samui. The large golden wheel and the dragon were added to the back of the Buddha much later.

The small temple complex, of which the Big Buddha is a part, is situated on an island called Fan Island. You can reach Fan Island via an approximately 400-meter-long bridge from the mainland of Koh Samui. The Buddha is visible from a distance and is therefore not to be missed. To see the Big Buddha up close, you will first need to climb 72 steps. The temple is free to visit.

A visit to the Big Buddha Temple is fun but not a full day. You can easily combine it with the cozy Fisherman’s Village and Bophut Beach nearby!

Big Buddha Temple: More than just a tourist attraction

Before you arrive at the Big Buddha Temple, you first pass through a very small village. In the village, souvenirs and Buddha-related items are sold. Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities to eat at the many stalls. Due to the tourist shops, the authenticity of the temple fades into the background.

The Big Buddha Temple may seem more like a tourist attraction, but for the Thai people, it is a spiritual place. Early in the morning, you have the best chance to experience this. Believers make sacrifices in the form of flowers and food during this time. You may also have the opportunity to see monks during their morning prayers. At the entrance, you will be reminded of the clothing rules and regulations. There are options to borrow covering clothing if you arrive unprepared. You don’t have to pay for this.
