Transportation
Getting to Koh Samui
You can easily get to Koh Samui by plane, with several direct flights from Bangkok available every day. The island has its own airport, which connects to various destinations in Thailand and some international locations. Airlines like Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways frequently operate flights to and from the island.
If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider taking the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Once you arrive in Surat Thani, you can catch a bus to the port and then hop on a ferry to Koh Samui. For booking your train, bus, and ferry tickets, 12Go is a great platform that simplifies the planning process, making it much easier than trying to handle everything on your own.
Songthaew / Taxi Koh Samui
On Koh Samui is the main mode of transportation is the Songthaew, a small open pickup truck that you share with other passengers. These trucks run on fixed routes around the island, and you can flag them down by the roadside. Prices for traveling from one beach to another are often displayed on signs. Bargaining isn’t really effective.
Renting a scooter
For the ultimate freedom and also the cheapest way to explore the island, rent a scooter and discover Koh Samui on your own. You can find a scooter rental shop in every town. The roads are generally well-maintained; however, the main roads can be quite busy, and people sometimes drive aggressively, which may make your scooter ride feel less relaxing. Having scooter experience and a healthy dose of caution is helpful here. Nevertheless, Koh Samui is a beautiful island to ride around.
Renting a taxi
A popular option for families or anyone looking to explore the island comfortably is to hire a taxi for a few hours, half a day, or a full day. You can discuss with the driver what you want to see. Always agree on the price in advance. The most cost-effective way is to negotiate directly with a taxi driver. While you can book a taxi in advance through various websites, it is usually more expensive than arranging it on-site and negotiating with a driver yourself.
On Koh Samui, taxis don’t use meters. Instead, they have set fares that are usually a bit on the pricey side. Also, there’s no Grab or Bolt service available on the island.
