Long Beach: Your perfect getaway on Phi Phi Don!

Long Beach, officially known as Haad Yao, is a stunning white powdery beach located on Phi Phi Don island. This beautiful beach is well-loved by both locals and tourists alike. When you mention Long Beach, every inhabitant of the island knows exactly what you mean. The beach is lined with a variety of restaurants and resorts, offering visitors plenty of dining options and accommodations. With numerous trees and palm trees, there are many nice shady spots, ensuring the beach never feels overcrowded. Long Beach is also a fantastic spot for snorkeling.

Chill out at Long Beach

At Long Beach, people primarily come for a relaxing beach holiday. Loud music, as played on the popular Loh Dalum Beach, is rare on this beautiful shore. However, regular fire dance shows take place in the evenings, and you can dine with your feet in the sand. The beach is a half-hour walk along a jungle path from the center (Ton Sai Village). The sea is crystal clear (depending on the season) and drops off quickly, making it an excellent spot for swimming. However, it may be less suitable for younger children.

From the beach, you can enjoy views of the rocks and the stunning island of Koh Phi Phi Leh, known from the movie “The Beach.”

The restaurants on Long Beach all belong to the resorts on this beach. Of course, you can sleep in one resort and dine at another.

Snorkeling and shark spotting

When you walk all the way down Long Beach towards the south, you can see Shark Point from the beach. There are rocks sticking out of the water (water shoes are handy here). The rocks themselves are not very spectacular, but the reef sharks seen here certainly are! You still need to be lucky to spot a shark, but it happens regularly!

Near Shark Point is a stretch of sea where you can snorkel safely because there are no longtail boats. The sharks seen here vary from baby sharks to specimens measuring one to two meters. You are most likely to see them in the early morning. Of course, in addition to sharks, you can also observe colorful fish. Shark Point is regularly visited during snorkeling trips around the island.

Hiking trail to Loo Moo Dee Beach

Approximately at Shark Point, just past the Phi Phi Long Beach Resort & Villa, a path leads inland to Loo Moo Dee Beach. Currently, there are no accommodations here, but you can rent sun loungers for 100 baht per day. Drinks are available when the shop is open. A little further from the beach is the brand new PP Mountain Beach Resort & Water Park (from €62), a resort featuring water slides shaped like an octopus. A longtail boat taxi to Loo Moo Dee Beach costs 200 baht per person. Additionally, Loo Moo Dee Beach is often visited during snorkeling tours around the island, which are generally cheaper.

How do I get to Long Beach Koh Phi Phi?

In the evening, the fare is 150 baht per person, and after midnight, it rises to 200 baht. The longtail boat will get you there in just 5 minutes. You can rent longtail boats anywhere on the beach; the drivers are typically waiting around, and there are often signs displaying the prices.

Walking trail to Long Beach

Another more adventurous option is to walk to Long Beach. The route can be steep in places, but it’s manageable if you’re on foot and take breaks as needed. The last section involves some climbing and scrambling, but there are ropes to assist you, and you’ll be almost there! Along the way, you’ll also pass a few small idyllic beaches that might tempt you to stop walking altogether!

Start your hike at the Phi Phi Bayview Resort; from here, the route is regularly signposted. Along the way, you will pass the Phi Phi Bayview Premier Resort and the unique Viking Nature Resort, which extends almost all the way to Long Beach.

You will also come across a charming little bar, beautiful small beaches, and some restaurants—there’s no need to rush! It took us about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace from the center of Koh Phi Phi (Ton Sai Village); you are about half an hour away. Good to remember is that there is no lighting; this route is not suitable when it is dark.

The best resorts and restaurants

There are several resorts on this beach where you mainly pay for the location. Some 3 or 4-star hotels may not be as luxurious as you would expect. Phi Phi The Beach Resort (from €74) and Viking Nature Resort (from €25 to €150) have good reviews. The cheaper rooms at Viking Nature Resort are usually booked quickly. It’s also good to know that Viking Nature Resort is not located directly on Long Beach but has several small beautiful beaches nearby. Most resorts offer free transportation by longtail boat to and from the resort; you will be met at the pier and brought back after your stay. Walking with heavy luggage is not recommended.
