Haad Salad, Koh Phangan

Haad Salad, located in the northwest of Koh Phangan, is a stunning half-kilometer-long beach that’s perfect for relaxation and family fun. Its easy accessibility makes it an ideal spot to visit during your stay on the island. Whether you’re traveling with young children or seeking a peaceful retreat, Haad Salad offers a beautiful setting, clear waters, and local eateries.

Where is Salad Beach located on Koh Phangan?

Haad Salad is located on the northwest coast of Koh Phangan, Thailand. It is situated about 15 kilometers from Thong Sala, the main town and ferry port of the island. To reach Haad Salad, you can take a songthaew or rent a scooter, which allows for easy exploration of the surrounding areas. The beach is nestled between several other beaches, including Haad Yao and Mae Haad (Koh Ma), making it a convenient stop for visitors exploring the northern part of the island.

Haad Salad, the beach itself

Haad Salad features a beautiful, clean white sand beach, nestled in a bay surrounded by lush greenery. The beach offers shaded areas thanks to the various trees that grow there. Along the shore, you’ll find several restaurants and bars where you can enjoy delicious meals at reasonable prices. Children will also have a great time searching for shells; especially during low tide, there are many beautiful ones to collect. For those looking to relax even further, massages are available on the beach, providing an extra touch of indulgence. And if you stay a little longer, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunset!

The sea at Haad Salad has calm clear waters

The sea at Haad Salad is known for its calm and clear waters, making it an ideal spot for both relaxation and exploration. The absence of strong currents ensures that the bathing seawater is safe for all ages, with shallow areas perfect for young children. During low tide, visitors must walk through shallow water to reach deeper swimming areas, but this also makes it a prime location for snorkeling. Just 100 meters from the shore lies a vibrant coral reef teeming with marine life, including angelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. The reef provides excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, with equipment available for rent at beachside restaurants. Additionally, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) are popular activities in the area.

In the sea of Salad Beach there are numerous stones, sharp corals and sea urchins scattered on the bottom. Water shoes are no luxury here. And please note that in the months September, October and November there can be a strong wind that can cause high and dangerous waves in the bay.

Haad Salad and its small village

Well, village, we better call it a few streets… In these streets you’ll find some resorts, some of which are next to the beach. The same goes for the restaurants and bars, many of them belong to the resorts. But also in the streets behind the beach you’ll find enough restaurants for a quick or extensive bite. And when you run out of money, you can withdraw money at the ATM’s that can be found here. In addition to the restaurants, there are also some supermarkets, dive shops, travel agencies, massage parlours and a pharmacy. Of course there are also a number of tourist shops that sell clothes, beach items and souvenirs. It is also possible to rent a scooter to explore the rest of the island.

At the main road right behind the small village of Haad Salad you will find an area with amazing villas and suites called Bay Villas, we were guests here in October 2024 and wrote an extensive review about our stay and its location.

Check the prices and more information about Bay Villas via Booking and/or Agoda. You will love it there!

The Pirates of Haad Salad Beach

Haad Salad Beach is historically known as a pirate hideout. In the 18th century, Thai pirates used this secluded bay as a base for launching attacks on merchant ships departing from Bangkok, often loaded with opium or other valuable goods. This history has earned it the nickname “Pirate Beach.” Interestingly, “Salad” means pirate in the local language of Koh Phangan. The bay was frequently used by pirates to recover from lost sea battles and repair their ships. From this beach, they would watch for passing ships to chase down, though such pursuits rarely ended well for the pursued. There are also rumors of hidden treasures on Haad Salad,
