Mermaid Restaurant & Café: Enjoying Thai and Western dishes near Ao Chao Beach

Mermaid Restaurant & Café on Koh Kood is known as an easy-going, pleasant spot for both Western and Thai dishes. No fuss, just a lovely relaxed island vibe. This cozy café-restaurant is located on the west side of the island, close to Ao Chao Beach, a beach famous for luxury resorts like High Season and Peter Pan Resort.

We stayed ourselves at the beautiful Tolani Resort, less than a two-minute drive and about a fifteen-minute walk away. Thanks to this ideal location, Mermaid became an easy stop for a relaxing lunch while exploring Koh Kood.

The kitchen focuses on familiar flavors, fresh ingredients, and friendly service — exactly what you need after a day at the beach. Whether you’re craving a Thai classic or a comfort dish from Western cuisine, Mermaid is always a good choice.

Location & Atmosphere

Mermaid Restaurant & Café is situated along the main road near Klong Chao — one of the busiest and liveliest areas of Koh Kood. You can’t miss it: the blue-and-white exterior stands out cheerfully against the island’s green backdrop.

Inside and outside, you’ll find an open-air setting with wooden and rattan furniture, small decorative details, and a relaxed vibe that immediately feels like vacation. It’s the kind of place where you can easily walk in without a reservation and feel comfortable right away.

The crowd is nicely mixed: Thai families, backpackers, and couples looking for an accessible place to eat, not far from their resort or the beach. That’s exactly what makes Mermaid such a nice, down-to-earth spot on Koh Kood.

Service & Menu

Mermaid Restaurant & Café on Koh Kood is known for a wide menu with both Thai classics and familiar Western dishes. Think pad thai, fried rice, massaman curry, green curry, tom yum kung, and various fried fish dishes. Seafood lovers have plenty of options with shrimp, squid, and local fish.

What we found especially practical is the clear layout of the menu. For example, if you choose a curry, you can decide for a small extra charge whether you want it with chicken, beef, pork, or vegetarian. Handy, especially when eating with others who have different preferences.

There’s also plenty of choice in the Western selection: burgers, sandwiches, fries, and simple pastas. Ilonka ordered a tuna melt sandwich. It was definitely fresh and tasty but the portion was a bit small — delicious but just not quite enough to fully satisfy a hungry stomach.

The service at Mermaid Restaurant & Café on Koh Kood was friendly and quick, just as you hope after a long day at the beach. Other travelers we talked to were positive about the service too, confirming our experience.

Prices are mid-range for Koh Kood — reasonable and manageable, especially considering the portions. My generous fried rice was without doubt the better choice of the two dishes we ordered. Well-filled, flavorful, and exactly what you need after a day of sun, sea, and exploring Koh Kood!

Our conclusion

All in all, we find Mermaid Restaurant & Café a reliable choice for a tasty, no-nonsense meal on Koh Kood. Not high-end dining but just good food, spacious seating, and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. That’s why we like coming here.

Besides food, they also serve fruit shakes, smoothies, and ice-cold beers — perfect after a hot day on the beach. They even sell ice cream, making it a nice cooling stop while driving around the island.

An easy-going spot where you can just sit down and enjoy.

Near Mermaid Restaurant & Café you can easily refuel (cash only) and withdraw money. This makes it an ideal stop during a day discovering Koh Kood — eat, recharge (literally and figuratively), and then off to the next beach or fun adventure on Koh Kood.
