Roots Hill Café, also known as Chao Lay Bar, is located on Ting Rai Beach and has a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere. This colorful, reggae-style spot fits perfectly with Koh Jum’s relaxed vibe. Kick off your flip-flops, enjoy a drink with your feet in the sand, take a dip in the clear blue sea, and stay to watch the stunning sunset.

In the evening, the bar comes alive with atmospheric lighting. You can also order a variety of dishes and relax in one of the many cozy spots around the bar. There is no printed menu; the dishes are written on wooden boards, and you can sometimes even order something that is not listed.

Live music is played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. With a beach bonfire and an impressive fire show, it has everything you need for a perfect, leisurely day by the sea!

Roots Hill Café / Chao Lay Bar is situated in the middle of nature and pays close attention to reducing plastic use. No plastic is used in the bar. For example, drinks are served in coconut-shell cups, and food is served on woven bamboo trays lined with banana leaves. Beach cleanups are also regularly organized.

How to get to Roots Hill Café

The route to the bar is not the easiest in the evening. Before reaching the beach access, you first have to ride along a somewhat bumpy path, but if you take it slowly, the route is manageable by scooter. Park your scooter behind Sea Smile Beach Resort Koh Jum and reach the beach via a few steps. Then walk a short distance north along the beach, and you’re there!

When is Roots Hill Café open?

Like several other bars and restaurants on Koh Jum, this venue may be closed during the rainy season, from May to October. Therefore, check in advance whether the bar is open to avoid disappointment.
