Koh Chang is known for its lush jungle, beautiful beaches and friendly vibe. But if you want to avoid the busier White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach, you’ll find a little slice of paradise at Klong Prao Beach on the mid-west coast: Sol Beach Koh Chang. For us, this small-scale resort felt like a relaxed escape — right on the beach, intimate in atmosphere, and comfortable enough to stay for days. After more than a week of exploring Koh Chang, this is where we found our balance.

Where on Koh Chang is Sol Beach located?

The charming Sol Beach sits on Klong Prao Beach, a stretch of sand that’s growing in popularity and slowly maturing with more resorts, restaurants and beach bars. From the northern pier on Koh Chang it’s about a 20-minute taxi or scooter ride, and from the southern Bang Bao pier it takes roughly thirty minutes.

Scandinavian Design with a Thai Soul

This small and cosy resort has fewer than thirty bungalows and radiates an easy beach vibe. Think light colours, natural materials and soft, rounded shapes that create calming comfort.

At Sol Beach you feel the best of both worlds come together: clean Scandinavian design paired with the warm soul of traditional Thai craftsmanship. The bungalows are simple, light and peaceful. The soft colours and natural materials allow the surroundings to shine. The wood used throughout comes from old Thai rice boats, giving every corner its own story and a warm, authentic atmosphere.

The fabrics, like the curtains, are made with care by local communities in Northern Thailand. This not only supports traditional craftsmanship, but also gives each bungalow its own unique character.

The large restaurant is a cosy place to enjoy a drink, coffee or meal. With playful tables, chairs and benches, it always feels relaxed and inviting. When it comes to design, Sol Beach is easily one of the nicest places to stay on Koh Chang. Here, you sleep in style with the sea as your backyard.

Sol’s unique atmosphere

Sol Beach Koh Chang attracts a friendly crowd with a young mindset. Everyone is open and kind, helped by the cheerful staff who set the tone from the moment you arrive. We didn’t leave the resort from check-in to check-out, which says a lot. We truly felt at home. You won’t find mass tourism here, but rather a mix of couples and friends who want a little more comfort than the nearby hotels offer.

One thing we really love is that Sol Beach sits directly on the sand. Some of the loungers are reserved for guests, and in the evenings a relaxed, informal vibe takes over with soft background music.

Service & Hospitality

From the general manager to the housekeeping team, and from the restaurant staff to reception: everyone is friendly and helpful. Most team members speak good English, which is great for international travellers on Koh Chang.

Check-in was a bit hectic and chaotic for us. We didn’t receive an explanation about the resort and were basically outside again within a minute with just a welcome drink in hand. It felt rushed. Outside, however, the team welcomed us warmly and immediately took our luggage because the spring tide had flooded the path. We later learned that this only happens once or twice a year, which explains the slightly chaotic moment.

What we did appreciate is that you aren’t overwhelmed with formalities. Need something — a scooter, a snorkelling tour, beach tips or just a quick question? They help you straight away. The personal touch truly makes a difference here; you feel like a guest, not a number.

The Sol Bungalows

The bungalows are spread out behind a beautifully maintained tropical garden that gradually blends into the beach. The resort has three rows of bungalows: the first directly on the beach, and the second and third set slightly behind. A raised wooden walkway leads you to your own little house in the greenery. Even the farthest bungalows are only a five-minute walk to the main restaurant and the beach.

There are six different bungalow categories at Sol Beach Koh Chang. Each has its own name — like Stella, Ciello and Luna — giving the place a fun, personal touch.

Beach Front: Direct sea view and just a few steps from the beach.
Deluxe Garden View: Clean rooms with a private terrace.
Queen Family: A lovely family room in the second garden row.
Deluxe Family Garden View: More spacious, ideal for small groups or families.
Deluxe: Partial sea view, located in the first or second garden row.
Two Bedroom: Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, ideal for families with older kids.

All bungalows have excellent air-conditioning, a Nespresso machine, a spacious bathroom and are spotless. The only thing we found less practical was the internet system — you receive a code that must be re-entered daily and per device. This could definitely be improved.

Our Deluxe Garden Bungalow

When we walked into our Deluxe Garden Bungalow, it smelled of menthol — a fresh, clean scent that immediately made everything feel spotless. And it was. The bed linens were changed daily, and on other days the room was tidied neatly.

The large bed, soft blanket and comfortable pillows may well be the softest bed on all of Koh Chang. If you’re looking for a great room with an incredibly comfortable bed at a good price, Sol Beach is a top choice.

It’s clear that this small resort was created by people with true hospitality experience. The air-conditioning remote is conveniently placed next to the bed, there are USB and USB-C outlets, the bathroom is spacious with a separate toilet and vanity, there’s a ceiling fan, good coffee and tea facilities, and you get four bottles of water per day instead of two.

We take our hats off. This is the kind of place you want to return to. We’re already curious how it will be in a few years, but we’re confident the quality will remain.

The beach right in front is quiet, clean and wide, with clear water perfect for swimming. There’s no swimming pool, but you don’t miss it at all — the sea is your infinity pool, and that’s part of the charm here.

Different tours

Explore the islands around Koh Chang with Sol Beach and choose from six different small-group boat trips. Snorkel at Koh Yuak and Koh Suwan, enjoy a relaxed sunset trip, or head out at night for squid fishing with a local fisherman. You can also escape to the secluded Wai Check Beach or book the Private Silent Beach Escape if you’re looking for privacy.

All trips include snorkelling gear, life jackets, fresh fruit and water. You can order food and drinks on board. Bookings are made at reception — an easy, carefree way to enjoy the water and the island vibe.

Food & Drinks

Restaurant

The spacious restaurant doubles as a bar and coffee shop, serving a mix of Thai favourites, Asian dishes and Western options. During breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner it’s usually pleasantly busy — no surprise, because the atmosphere is warm, the food is tasty, the drinks are original and the service is excellent.

Service is friendly. A small practical downside: the tables have gaps along the edge where cutlery can easily fall through — not ideal during a relaxed breakfast, but they assured us they are working on improvements.

During our four-day “finding my balance in the Thai sun” stay, we enjoyed:

Breakfast

Tropical Chia Pudding (coconut chia pudding with coconut flakes, peanut butter, homemade granola and a mango-banana smoothie)
Back to Basics (yoghurt, mixed tropical fruit, homemade granola and coconut)
Egg Benedict (homemade sourdough with avocado, bacon and hollandaise sauce)
Avo Smash (homemade sourdough with avocado, scrambled eggs, quinoa, chia and tomato)

Lunch

Special Som Tam with smoked salmon cubes, squid and rice noodles
Chicken satay with three skewers, super-tender chicken, a large portion of roti and peanut sauce

Dinner

Japanese edamame
Guacamole with nachos
Sol Roll sushi (tempura prawn, mango, avocado, cucumber and chilli mayo)
Summer rolls with chicken, avocado and crunchy vegetables, served with two dips
Spaghetti with truffle oil and cream (no mushrooms)
Homemade cheesecake with raspberry coulis and whipped cream

Beverages

High-quality (iced) coffees — some staff previously worked at the famous dessert café After You
Various fruit shakes such as banana, mango and watermelon
Superfood smoothies including:
- Mango Golden Milk (mango, banana, yoghurt, milk and turmeric)
- Espress Yourself (banana, chocolate protein, espresso and raw cacao
- Berry Bliss (banana, blueberries, peanut butter and oats)

Our experience with the food & drinks

Dinner was the least impressive. The guacamole lacked flavour, the summer rolls contained little chicken and came with a spicy seafood sauce that didn’t quite match. The sushi was okay, but we may be spoiled after a great Japanese meal in Bangkok.

Of course, this may have been a one-off moment — other guests we spoke to were very happy with their dinner. The dessert, a nice cheesecake was excellent by the way!

Breakfast, lunch, and the smoothies were definitely the highlights. The chicken satay stood out with perfectly marinated, juicy chicken and a delicious grilled flavor. The Som Tam special was also excellent. During breakfast, we enjoyed all four dishes we tried. And to top it off, the beverages with a free sea view were simply delightful!

Our conclusion

Sol Beach Koh Chang is perfect for travellers looking for peace, beach and a tropical vibe, yet still close to lively Lonely Beach. Don’t expect a luxury resort, but you will get comfortable bungalows by the sea, personal service and a relaxed atmosphere. Ideal for couples and friends who want a mix of downtime and social energy.

The value for money is excellent, especially for the beachfront options, which are often pricier elsewhere on Koh Chang. It’s not a resort with pools and full spa facilities, but a place where you wake up with the sea at your doorstep and the holiday feeling begins instantly.
