Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort: Tropical family paradise on a beautiful spot of Klong Prao Beach

We have stayed at Centara resorts before. Our favorite will probably always be the ultra-luxurious Centara Reserve on Koh Samui. But from the moment we arrived, Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort made a strong impression!

We were picked up at our first hotel on Koh Chang. After a short ten-minute drive from White Sand Beach, we reached the resort. That’s where the warm welcome began: cold towels, a refreshing pandan drink and that familiar Thai smile saying “welcome” without using words.

It immediately felt good. Our driver Khun Simon was incredibly kind and helpful. We instantly knew: this is going to be a great stay!

A bit of history

Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort opened in 2005 and was completely renovated in 2012, after being acquired by the Centara Group. A fun fact: this was the first resort on Koh Chang to become part of an international hotel chain.

You can tell the resort has been around for a while — but in a good way. The character and charm are still very much intact.

The garden is one of the most beautiful parts of the resort: palms, flowers, winding paths, small bridges, birds, fish and butterflies all around you. Even though we stayed during high season, the atmosphere remained very calm and peaceful.

Exactly what we were looking for after spending a few busy days in White Sand Beach — a tropical oasis where you instantly feel that true island vibe.

Where is Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort located?

The resort sits on the west coast of Koh Chang, right on a quieter part of Klong Prao Beach. It borders a small river that flows into the sea and has a lovely beachfront that almost feels private. From anywhere on the property, you can walk straight onto the beach.

In the surrounding area you’ll find small restaurants, massage places, shops and even a 7-Eleven. There’s also a local school and a temple nearby. From Ao Sapparot Pier, it’s roughly 30 minutes by taxi, scooter or songthaew.

The beach and sea here are wonderful, but you’ll definitely notice the tide differences. Sometimes there’s a wide beach… and a few hours later, the sea almost reaches the sunbeds. Nature sets the rhythm here — and we loved that.

Architecture and Design

Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort feels like a tropical village where nature and tranquility come together. It’s not hyper-modern — rather rustic, with the traditional Thai resort look.

There are a few distinctive buildings like the open-air lobby, the spa (with gym upstairs) and the large Sea Breeze restaurant. Winding pathways lead through the tropical gardens filled with lush plants and fragrant flowers.

The rooms and standalone cabanas are built with natural materials such as wood, rattan and stone, blending beautifully into the landscape.

The beachfront area offers plenty of space, a seafront infinity pool and a relaxed beach bar connected to the restaurant. With open sides, the restaurant gets a nice sea breeze — very welcome on warm days.

Its atmosphere

Even though Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort is popular with families, we found the atmosphere very laid-back. Our cabana was quiet, and the entire resort became peaceful in the evenings. The only busier area was near the pools, bar and restaurant — where most activities take place.

The crowd seemed nicely mixed: families, couples and small friend groups, mainly from Thailand, looking for comfort. A family-friendly resort — but definitely not overrun with children. A good balance.

Typical Centara service & hospitality

The relaxed atmosphere is also thanks to the friendly Centara team. They maintain the 4-star standard well and keep everything running smoothly. Many staff members, especially in management, speak good English. The reception is 24/7 open, so help is always available.

The restaurant staff is kind and tries their best. Sometimes the language barrier shows, but service clearly has high priority, just as you’d expect from Centara.

Tip

You can easily rent a scooter right in front of the resort — super handy!

Our Junior Suite Garden View

Our cabana was beautifully hidden in the tropical greenery. About 7 minutes from the lobby and less than 2 minutes from the beach! From our spacious terrace we could even see a glimpse of the sea — a perfect morning view.

We slept upstairs, reached via a spiral staircase. The room was spacious with a wooden floor and soft rugs. The bed was great and we loved having a Nespresso machine.

The high ceiling with a ceiling fan kept the air fresh — perfect in the tropical climate. We also liked the modern keycard system and the app for contacting reception, ordering coffee or amenities, or arranging in-room dining.

The bathroom was large and clearly recently renovated. Beautiful tiles and colors, with sliding doors separating the areas: a separate toilet, a big jacuzzi, and a rain shower with strong water pressure and plenty of hot water.We were delighted to find Panpuri amenities — one of our favorite Thai wellness brands.

Facilities and what to do at the resort?

Two pools

A large infinity pool with ocean views and comfy loungers, plus a Splash Pool with a big slide — perfect for kids.

Spa Cenvaree

Possibly the best hotel spa on Koh Chang. We booked a 60-minute aroma couple massage in a large treatment room with jacuzzi and steam room. Medium pressure, and honestly: the best massage we’ve had on Koh Chang so far.

Ask for Khun Tik and Khun Eam — true professionals. You can also get a massage near the beach — like on many Thai beaches, but this time by experts.

Gym

Located above the spa and well-equipped for both cardio and strength training.

(Water) sports

SUP boards, kayaking, beach games, yoga, aqua aerobics — plenty to stay active.

Food & Drinks

There are several spots to eat or enjoy a drink, including a small bar near the lobby and a pool bar by the slide.

Sea Breeze Restaurant

The all-day dining restaurant is the heart of the resort — serving Thai and international cuisine, managed by Raffy and his friendly team. The restaurant has about 200 seats and is right by the sea — perfect for meals with a view.

Service is friendly. A small practical downside: the tables have gaps along the edge where cutlery can easily fall through — not ideal during a relaxed breakfast, but they assured us they are working on improvements.

Breakfast

The breakfast was the only area where our expectations were a little higher. For a 4-star resort, especially a Centara, we hoped for more choice and better quality. We know Koh Chang is an island, but still — it can be improved.

A great addition though: a station where Thai Tea and Cafe Boran (Thai coffee) were freshly prepared.

Lunch

Lunch pleasantly surprised us. We shared a Margherita pizza and a Caprese salad on our comfy sunbeds by the beach — fresh, tasty and just the right portion size. Exactly what you want on a relaxed beach day.

Charcoal BBQ Buffet

A highlight! Even though it’s not a full BBQ (only shrimp is grilled live on a grill, the rest is pre-grilled or cooked), all the dishes we tasted were very tasty and freshly prepared. We really recommended this one — especially with the fun fire show at 20:00.

Tip

Even if you don’t dine here, get a cocktail and enjoy the fire show and sea view!

Cocktails & Drinks

We loved the Happy Hours during our stay. The 12–13h one was too early for us, but 16–19h was perfect timing.

The Frozen Margaritas were great — especially the mango version. And for under 150 THB… who can say no to that?

Daiquiri and Moscow Mule were also good — though we missed the classic copper mug for the Mule. Our final test drink: a Negroni — powerful, bitter-sweet and exactly right.

During the day we enjoyed fruit shakes like mango-ginger, and the Simple Red mocktail with pineapple, coconut cream and grenadine. Refreshing between dips in the sea.

Our conclusion

Centara Koh Chang Tropicana Resort is an excellent choice for travelers looking for peace and nature on Koh Chang. The tropical garden, traditional cabanas and almost private beachfront create a relaxing island vibe. With spacious rooms, two pools (including a kids’ slide) and a top spa, there’s something for everyone.

Service is friendly, food is good (breakfast could improve), and the location near local restaurants and shops is very convenient. A great resort for families, couples and friends wanting comfort, facilities and tropical surroundings.
