How the taxi meter works

Always ask the driver to turn on the meter before the ride starts.
The meter starts at 35 baht and increases based on distance and waiting time.
Keep a close eye on the meter during the ride; sometimes they tamper with it, causing it to run faster.
Drivers who refuse to use the meter often offer higher fixed prices – decline and find another taxi.

Taxi costs in Bangkok

Starting fare: 35 baht (for the first few kilometers)
Per kilometer price: approximately 2 baht per kilometer
Additional charges for slow traffic / traffic jams: 1-2 baht per minute
Luggage fees: max 20 baht for small luggage, max 100 baht for large items
Toll fees: You usually have to pay these separately, typically 25-50 baht per toll booth. If you agree on a fixed price, make sure to ask whether this includes the toll fees or not. Sometimes a price may seem good at first, but if you have to pay the tolls on top, it can end up being more expensive.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Follow signs to Level 1 (arrival floor).
Go outside to the official taxi stand with several rows of taxis.
Take a ticket from the machine; you will receive a slip with a number corresponding to a sign above a taxi.
Walk to your assigned taxi and hand the slip to the driver.
Tell your destination and ask if the meter will be turned on.
TTake a quick photo of the license plate on the dashboard and the back door. That way, if you leave something behind in the taxi, you can easily contact the company or the driver.

Average cost: Around 500 baht including tolls and standard luggage.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Walk all the way to the end of the terminal and follow signs to the taxi stand.
Register at the waiting area counter and give your destination; you will receive a number.
Wait until the driver picks you up and escorts you to the taxi.
Hand your slip to the driver and ask if the meter will be started.
Take a photo of the license number for your own safety.

Average cost: Around 450 baht including tolls and standard luggage.

Note that extra charges may apply for large luggage or heavy traffic.

If you’ve booked a hotel with transportation included, someone will be waiting for you here—usually holding a sign with your name on it. It might not be the cheapest way to get to your hotel, but it’s definitely the most convenient.

Only use official taxis with visible license numbers and driver photos on the dashboard.
Keep valuables with you; put other belongings in the trunk.
Avoid taxis that offer fixed prices without using the meter.
Never pay upfront for your taxi ride.
Be cautious at busy tourist spots where prices tend to be higher.
In case of problems, contact tourist police at 1155.

Hail a taxi like a local and avoid tourist scams

Taxis waiting outside a hotel or tourist attraction usually don’t use the meter and offer you so-called good deals or trips. It’s clear you are a tourist, and they think they can get more money from you. Look for another taxi and don’t take the first one in line. Walk a bit farther away from the hotel or other place and stop a moving taxi there.

To hail a taxi, hold your hand out with your palm facing down and curl your fingers toward yourself, like you’re signaling someone to slow down. Avoid the “come here” gesture with your palm up or giving a thumbs-up like you’re hitchhiking – those can come off as rude. Also, keep an eye on the taxi’s dashboard light: if it’s on, the taxi is available; if it’s off, it’s already taken. When a driver stops for you, tell them your destination. If they agree, say “meter please.” Once they confirm, get in and double-check that the meter is actually turned on.

Tip!

Never ask a taxi driver for restaurant recommendations. Most of the time, they won’t take you to a hidden gem or a top spot, but to places where they get a commission. And guess who ends up paying for that? You do.

Avoid rush hours if possible, since waiting times increase costs significantly

Taxi drivers: What you should know

Taxi drivers in Bangkok don’t always have the best reputation for being reliable, but there are definitely some friendly and honest ones out there. Having a little chat can make the ride more enjoyable. Plus, taxi drivers are great for practicing your Thai! If you don’t know any Thai yet, just stick to simple “Thai-English.” Most drivers don’t speak fluent English, so using short sentences and avoiding complicated words works best. For example, instead of saying “We did a lot of shopping today,” you’d say something like “We much shopping!”

Bring small bills and have change ready, as many drivers might not have any or may claim so to get extra money. It’s common and appreciated to round up your fare to the nearest ten baht, but it’s your choice. Many drivers come from poorer Isaan and work in Bangkok (during the rice off-season), which is why they may not know the roads well. They work long hours to support their families.
