What Is the Bangkok BTS Skytrain?

The Skytrain, officially called the Bangkok Mass Transit System but commonly known as the BTS, is an elevated train running above the streets of Bangkok. Some people also call it the “BTS Skytrain” or simply “the BTS.” It’s super convenient for quickly traveling from one place to another without getting stuck in traffic.

Why choose the BTS in Bangkok?

Speed: The BTS is faster than cars or buses because it runs above street traffic.
Reliability: The Bangkok BTS Skytrain runs on schedule and is easy to plan your trip around.

No BTS access to Khaosan Road

Important: The BTS does not run to Khaosan Road, Bangkok’s famous backpacker street. To get there, your best bet is to get off at Saphan Taksin station and take a taxi or river boat from there.

Connection with the Metro (MRT)

Some BTS stations are directly connected to MRT stations, making transfers super easy. Here are a few examples of these connections:

The Skytrain runs daily from approximately 6:00 AM to midnight (12:00 AM).

The first trains depart around 6:00 AM from the end stations.
The last trains leave around midnight, depending on the station.

This gives you over 18 hours per day of convenient travel on the BTS.

How does the BTS work? (Buying BTS tickets in Bangkok)

You can easily buy tickets at ticket machines or counters at every BTS station. The machines offer multiple languages including English. Simply select your destination and pay by cash or card.

If you plan to travel multiple times, a Rabbit Card is very handy. It’s a reloadable card that lets you tap in and out quickly without having to buy a ticket each time. You can purchase and reload it at stations.

Rush hour and crowds on the BTS

During rush hour (roughly 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM), trains can get very crowded as many people travel at the same time. Trains run frequently every few minutes, so wait times are usually short.

Because of the crowds, passengers are asked not to carry large backpacks during rush hour to save space. Eating and drinking are not allowed on trains or platforms – and you’ll hardly see anyone doing it – keeping the system clean and pleasant for everyone.

When is a taxi cheaper than the BTS?

If you’re traveling with 3 or 4 people outside rush hour, taking a metered taxi can sometimes be cheaper than buying individual BTS tickets for everyone. However, during rush hour, heavy traffic often causes long delays, so we recommend sticking with the BTS then.

How do you know which station you need?

Always check which direction your train is going. The BTS has two lines (Silom Line and Sukhumvit Line), and each train travels toward an end station. Signs on platforms show all stops and the train’s final destination—pay close attention! Getting on a train going the wrong way means you won’t reach your destination.

Inside the train, announcements are made in both Thai and English for upcoming stations. You’ll also see a map with all stops and lights indicating the next station. To be extra sure, use the official BTS SkyTrain app, which helps you plan your route, check schedules, and find your station easily.
