Wat Saket: The Golden Mount Temple on Bangkok’s man-made hill

A temple that stands out

Wat Saket, also known as the Golden Mount, is a temple that stands out thanks to its striking location on a hill in the middle of Bangkok. This is especially remarkable because Bangkok is naturally flat and has no hills. The hill on which Wat Saket sits was actually man-made for practical reasons.

Originally, a large chedi was planned for this spot, but during construction, it collapsed due to the weak and soft ground. To solve this problem, a mound of mud and bricks was built first. After about fifty years, this eventually formed a sturdy, natural-looking hill.

During the reign of King Rama IV, a smaller but still impressive golden chedi—about 100 meters tall—was constructed on top. In the 1940s, a wall was added around the chedi to protect it from erosion.

Heading to the top of Wat Saket

At the foot of Wat Saket, you’ll find some seating areas, a small temple, and various statues. After buying your ticket, you get the bonus challenge of climbing more than 300 steps to the top. The staircase spirals around the temple, with the first section laid out as a tropical garden, complete with small waterfalls. Sounds pretty pleasant, right?

Sorry to bring down the mood, but this place has also a dark past. In the 18th century, the plague swept through and killed thousands of people. Many were cremated right here. If you look closely, you’ll see old black-and-white photos among the rocks—quiet reminders of that tragic chapter.

All along the stairs of The Golden Mount, speakers have been installed, so you constantly hear a Thai man’s voice—probably reciting a prayer. As we climbed the steps, it gave us a truly mysterious feeling.

Further along, the tropical plants come to an end and you walk past several bells and a gong, all of which you can ring if you like. Before you reach the very top, there’s a middle hall where you can make offerings to Buddha. You’re allowed to keep your shoes on when entering this hall; this is clearly indicated.

Since this goes against what most people are used to, you’ll notice that many visitors still take off their shoes. There are also drinks, snacks, and ice cream for sale here. Some people might think that this is the highest point of Wat Saket because of this, but that’s not the case. So after enjoying a refreshing ice cream or drink, make sure to keep going—otherwise, you’ll miss out on the best view!

Why you can’t miss the hidden stairways of Wat Saket

Through discreet doorways, slightly hidden in the corners of the central hall, you reach the stairways that take you to the highest point. From here, you have an unobstructed view of Bangkok in every direction. Wat Saket might just be Bangkok’s very first sky bar. On a clear day, you can see the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun along the Chao Phraya River. Don’t forget to look straight down if you want to see the monks’ quarters.

Dresscode Wat Saket

Visitors are required to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and should not wear sleeveless shirts, shorts, or see-through clothing. Hats or caps are also not permitted inside the temple.

How to get to Wat Saket

The best way to reach Wat Saket is by taxi, tuk-tuk, or public transport. You can take the MRT to Sam Yot station and walk about 15 minutes to the temple. Alternatively, you can use the Chao Phraya Express Boat and get off at Phanfa Leelard Pier, which is a short walk of about 5 to 10 minutes from Wat Saket.
