The Metal Castle in Bangkok

Right in the heart of Bangkok, you’ll find a temple unlike any other: Wat Ratchanadda, also known as the ‘Metal Castle’. With its 36-meter-high structure and striking metal spires, this building easily stands out among other temples and constructions in Thailand’s capital.

Wat Ratchanadda was built in 1846 by order of King Rama III, inspired by similar temples in India and Sri Lanka. Today, it is the only remaining structure of its kind in the world; the original temples in India and Sri Lanka no longer exist. There is also a statue on the temple grounds honoring King Rama III.

The structure of Wat Ratchanatdaram

The temple is built on three levels. The lowest level features 24 spires, the middle level has 12, and at the very top sits an elegant main spire. Together, these 37 spires symbolize the 37 virtues on the path to enlightenment in Buddhism.

Loha Prasat means ‘iron castle’ or ‘iron monastery’, with ‘Loha’ meaning ‘iron’ or ‘metal’ and ‘Prasat’ meaning ‘castle’, ‘palace’, or ‘tower’.

The ground floor of the Wat Ratchanadda has many columns that support the towers and create a maze-like space. Here, there are small meditation cells for monks. Be sure to climb the spiral staircase to the top of the castle. Here, a precious relic of Buddha is preserved. From the walkway, you’ll also get a fantastic view of Bangkok, including a great sight of the famous Wat Saket.

Amulet Market near Wat Ratchanadda: Unique Buddhist good luck charms

Behind Loha Prasat, you’ll find a vibrant amulet market filled with stalls selling Buddha images, amulets, and religious talismans. Locals and collectors browse the tables in search of good luck and protection. It’s a lively spot to wander, discover unique items, and soak up the local atmosphere. The amulet market is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Most stalls close in the evening.

Getting to Wat Ratchanadda

You can take the MRT to Sam Yot or Ratchadamnoen Klang stations; both stations are about a 10–15 minute walk from Wat Ratchanadda.
Most taxi drivers know Wat Ratchanatdaram (Loha Prasat) and the surrounding area well. Always ask them to turn on the meter.
Wat Ratchanadda is easily accessible on foot if you are staying near Khao San Road (about a 10–12 minute walk) or Democracy Monument (about a 5-minute walk).

Dress code for Wat Ratchanadda visitors

Dress respectfully; it is required to cover shoulders and knees.
Shoes must be removed before entering the main temple building.
Remain calm and behave respectfully at all times.
Avoid wearing short shorts, mini skirts, sleeveless tops, or see-through clothing.
Hats and caps are allowed on the grounds, but it is polite to remove them inside the temple or while praying.
