Sala Rattanakosin Rooftop Bar: Cocktails with a phenomenal view of Wat Arun

Some rooftops we visit mainly for the super good cocktails, others are better for great atmosphere or music. In this case, we visited Sala Rattanakosin Rooftop Bar for its spectacular view over the Chao Phraya River, with Wat Arun as the undeniable centerpiece.

In early January 2026, we arrived here toward the end of the afternoon, around five o’clock. The sun was still fairly high. Around us were comfortable lounge sofas, chairs, an open space and bar — and everywhere, eyes that were repeatedly and almost automatically drawn to one single point: Wat Arun. This open-air terrace in Bangkok is one of those places where you order a first drink, settle in, and think – okay, we’re staying here for a while.

Where in Bangkok is the Sala Rattanakosin Rooftop Bar located?

The bar is located in Bangkok Old Town, on top of the beautiful boutique hotel Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok. You are sitting directly on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya river, enjoying a front-row seat to the city’s historical heart.

The bar is located on the fifth floor. You enter through the hotel and walk up a staircase toward the rooftop terrace. Taking the MRT to Sanam Chai station is the most sensible option; from there, it’s about a ten-minute pleasant stroll. For many, a taxi, Bolt or Grab is the most practical choice, often combined with a visit to the nearby Grand Palace or Wat Pho.

Architecture and (interior) design

The rooftop terrace is spacious and feels airy. No overcrowded tables, but a smart layout with lounge sofas, comfortable chairs, and bar stools — all positioned in a way that allows guests, in many cases, to fully enjoy the view. A large portion of the seating naturally faces Wat Arun, but even on the other side you are not missing out, with views that include parts of the Grand Palace.

The design is clean and modern, using a lot of white, grey, and black. Neutral tones, a grey floor, open spaces, and solid, comfortable cushions. No unnecessary decoration, no Instagram gimmicks — this is stylish without shouting. Part of the terrace is covered, which is very pleasant when it rains.

We estimate the capacity at around sixty guests: enough to create atmosphere, without ever feeling cramped.

Hospitality & service

At first the service wasn’t the best we had during visits at luxury locations like this, but  later in the evening, this clearly improved. The flow picked up, orders moved more smoothly, and attention increased. We also briefly spoke with David, the Executive Chef. A friendly, professional man from England who overseas multiple SALA restaurants for many years and oversees multiple locations. That conversation gave confidence in the culinary foundation.

Atmosphere & crowd

The atmosphere here clearly changes over time. Around five o’clock, it’s still warm and relaxed. There is little shade, which can make it hot, but you are consciously here for what’s coming next.

Around six o’clock, during our visit to this rooftop bar in Bangkok, a DJ started playing. The music sets a social, energetic tone without becoming club-like. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests and travelers (couples and groups of friends), expats, and the kind of Thai guests who appreciate the Bangkok Sunset cocktails with a sophisticated vibe. Guests clearly prefer the lounge sofas — rightly so, as these are the best seats on the rooftop.

Notable: after sunset, around 7:15 PM, it suddenly becomes quieter. Roughly half of the seats empty out, even though the view of Wat Arun is still fantastic. Why exactly? Perhaps people come mainly for sunset or move on to dinner elsewhere. For us, it was actually quite pleasant: more space, the same view, and better service attention.

Food & drinks: From golden hour to the final sip

We had a reservation and therefore secured a great lounge sofa with an amazing view. We started calmly with a bottle of sparkling water and ice — not cocktails right away, but first taking a moment to settle in.

Sala Sunset & Siam Spice – the start of the evening

Our first “real” drinks were the Sala Sunset and Siam Spice — the perfect introduction to Bangkok sunset cocktails. Well mixed, fresh in flavor, approachable, and seemingly designed to start the evening gently. While the sun was still high above Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn already began to slowly “glow” in the light. We were in a very good place.

Sala Chips

Our first bar bite at Sala Rattanakosin: Sala chips. Described as hand-cut, perfectly crispy, and ideal with the accompanying truffle mayonnaise. A solid starter alongside our first round of cocktails.

Daiquiri & Chao Phraya Gin Fizz

For the second round, we chose the Daiquiri and the Chao Phraya Gin Fizz. The classic Daiquiri was exactly how it should be — nicely acidic and without excessive sweetness. The Gin Fizz was excellent: light, refreshing, and perfectly suited to the moment when the heat slowly faded. This was when we could confidently say that the cocktails here are very well constructed, made by someone with serious bar experience.

Wagyu Beef Picanha & Chicken Skewers

The wagyu beef picanha from the open robata grill was excellent. Beautifully tender, perfectly grilled, and served with a sauce that did not overpower the flavor of the meat. It took a little while to arrive, but that felt logical. Quality simply takes more time.

The chicken skewers, our favorite dish of the evening, were juicy with a great grilled flavor — exactly what you expect from robata. The accompanying yuzu kosho paste was less to our taste — perhaps too bitter due to the peel — but honestly, the chicken didn’t need the sauce at all.

Spicy Salmon Taquito & Salmon Avocado Ceviche

Shortly after, two spicy salmon taquitos arrived: wonderfully crispy and very flavorful. Although the salmon avocado ceviche was generously portioned and the ceviche itself was well seasoned, it was disappointing to find that some pieces of avocado were clearly overripe. Aside from that, the dish was very well executed: fresh, bright, and the extremely thinly sliced onion almost looked like a rice noodle — briefly confusing, but texturally interesting. A shame, because the foundation is strong.

Mezcal Negroni & Long Island Iced Tea – a strong finish

We ended this enjoyable rooftop evening on a strong note. The Mezcal Negroni was well balanced, classically structured, with a subtle smoky note. I almost always try to finish with a Negroni on visits like this, and this one was good enough to stay in my memory. The Long Island Iced Tea did exactly what it was supposed to do. No surprises — just a solid, powerful evening.

Our conclusion

We arrived just a little too early for a cool start to the evening, but exactly on time for the light. The heat slowly disappeared, the colors changed, and watching Wat Arun transition from day to night is simply special and highly recommended.

Our favorites? In terms of drinks, the Chao Phraya Gin Fizz and the Negroni. And if we had to order food again, we would go for extra chicken and the taquitos.

In short: the view is unmatched, the cocktails are genuinely good, the food is largely strong, the service is fine, and the atmosphere is very pleasant.
