Tapori: Modern Indian cuisine with a cultural story in Bangkok

We celebrated Christmas Eve 2025 in Bangkok, our favorite city where cuisines from all over the world come together. As we are huge fans of Indian food, choosing Tapori Bangkok was an easy decision. This is an Indian restaurant that looks beyond the well-known classics and instead highlights the true diversity of India.

We started the evening with cocktails at Bubbs, the hidden bar that is part of Tapori. What followed felt like a warm welcome. Together with a few regular Indian guests, we shared stories, discovered new flavours, and became increasingly curious about the cuisine behind this concept.

Tapori Bangkok gave us more than just a great Christmas dinner. It was an evening full of flavour, culture, and inspiration — and one that left us wanting more. Without a doubt, this is one of our favourite Indian restaurants in Bangkok and a place we happily return to.

Where in Bangkok is Tapori located?

Tapori is located on Sukhumvit 47, a central Bangkok neighbourhood known for its restaurants, bars, and hotels. The restaurant is easy to reach by taxi, Bolt, or Grab. BTS is also convenient; from Phrom Phong or Thong Lo station it is less than a 15-minute walk.

A visual journey through India

The entrance immediately makes an impression. You enter Tapori through a more than 200-year-old, hand-carved wooden door from Rajasthan — a tangible piece of history that sets the tone right away.

Inside, the interior feels warm, modern, and layered. References to Indian craftsmanship and art are everywhere, without the space feeling heavy or traditional. The light-coloured floor creates a beautiful contrast and adds a sense of calm and openness.

During a walk through the restaurant, owner Rohit Sharma explained that the design was conceived as a visual journey through India. This is reflected in:

• geometric patterns inspired by Warli art
• sculptural elements from the Bastar tribal tradition
• narrative Madhubani paintings
• spiritual influences from Pichwai art

True eye-catchers include the hand-cut mirror mosaic of a peacock, the striking large wall clock, and the metre-wide painting that adds depth to the space. Outside, colourful elephants and a playful frog add a light-hearted, whimsical touch.

Tapori’s ambiance

Although it was relatively quiet during our visit, we can easily imagine how lively Tapori Bangkok feels on busier evenings. The regular crowd is a mix of locals, Indians living in Bangkok, expats, and travellers who — like us — consciously choose something different from the standard options.

This is not a restaurant for a quiet, intimate dinner, but rather a place to share, taste, and explore new flavours together. We will definitely return in 2026, specifically on a busier night — not only for the food, but especially to experience the energy and atmosphere that make Tapori Bangkok so distinctive.

It’s service

The service is attentive and relaxed. The chef personally took the time to speak with us and enthusiastically explained where the dishes come from and how they are meant to be eaten. Everything arrived at a comfortable pace, keeping the atmosphere easygoing and enjoyable throughout the evening.

Type of cuisine – India beyond clichés

Tapori focuses on Indian street food and regional dishes, with many small plates designed for sharing. Do not expect butter chicken, tikka masala, or standard naan combinations — these classics are deliberately not on the menu.

Inspiration comes from all 28 states and 8 union territories of India. Not from restaurants, but from family kitchens, markets, coastal areas, and mountain regions. Each dish is an interpretation of such encounters, respectful of its origins yet translated into a modern dining setting.

Chef Rohit Sharma

Tapori is synonymous with Rohit Sharma, a hospitality veteran and owner of R4 Hospitality. With more than 100 restaurant concepts to his name, he knows exactly how cuisine, design, and experience reinforce one another.

Tapori is his most personal project. During his travels across India, he collected more than 300 recipes directly from local families and kitchens. From these, 29 dishes were selected for the menu, together forming a culinary journey through India.

At Tapori, cooking is pure storytelling. Every dish reflects Indian culture without becoming nostalgic or heavy, showcasing just how versatile the cuisine truly is.

The Menu

The menu is clear and clearly designed for sharing — perfect for anyone who wants to explore multiple flavours in one evening.

What we ate at Tapori during our Christmas Eve dinner in 2025

We started with Dal Pakwan from Sindh, a brunch classic featuring soft lentils, crisp flatbread, creamy yoghurt, and coriander, tamarind, and date chutneys. Sweet, spicy, and tangy in perfect balance. Comfort food with depth — and a true feast for the eyes. Highly recommended.

The Andhra Pepper Chicken Fry from Andhra Pradesh was bold and powerful. Tender chicken tossed with freshly ground black pepper, curry leaves, and southern spices. Spicy, yet well controlled.

With Keema Ghotala from Maharashtra, we were transported to Mumbai. Spiced minced lamb with softly cooked quail eggs, served with fluffy ladi pav (delicious bread). Mix it all together and scoop it up with bread — seriously good.

The Naga Pork Crisp from Nagaland delivered intensity. Crispy pork with Indian Sichuan pepper and a spicy chilli-garlic chutney. Our favourite dish on the menu — outstanding crunch and incredible flavours.

The Araku Chicken Biryani from Andhra Pradesh stood out among the dishes. Chicken and basmati rice layered in bamboo and slowly cooked over an open fire. Smoky, earthy, and deeply flavoured. Unlike any biryani we had tried before — we could not get enough of it.

To finish the savoury dishes, we enjoyed the Doi Maach Curry from West Bengal — black pomfret in a yoghurt sauce with mustard seeds, nigella, and green chillies, served with ghee rice — alongside the Chicken Beliram Curry from Punjab, featuring tender chicken in a rich sauce of spiced yoghurt, caramelised onions, and freshly ground spices. Naturally, naan bread had to be part of the table.

We ended with Benami Kheer from Uttar Pradesh, a creamy, subtle dessert with a secret ingredient and a long history rooted in the royal kitchens of Awadh. We promised not to reveal the secret ingredient, but we can strongly recommend ordering this dessert. Perhaps the chef or one of the team members will tell you…

Beverages @ Bubbs

Tapori features a hidden bar called Bubbs. Here, cocktails and mocktails are crafted by mixologist Palm, perfectly paired with the spiced flavours of Tapori’s cuisine. Fresh, aromatic, and never too heavy.

What stands out is the absence of sugar water or artificial syrups. Sweetness comes purely from natural ingredients, keeping the drinks balanced and highly drinkable alongside the food.

During our evening at Tapori Bangkok, we enjoyed De Tonka, Lima, Amrud (absolute favourite!), and Nashpati. Each cocktail had its own personality, yet all worked beautifully with the Indian dishes.

There is no extensive wine list, but that fits the street food concept. Not in the mood for cocktails? A cold beer pairs surprisingly well with the spiced Indian dishes. Water, of course, works just as well — simple and effective.
