Khao San, Love it or hate it!

At night, the volume is turned up everywhere, and people dance enthusiastically in clubs, bars, and on the streets. Alongside the newest EDM and Top 40 hits, everyone still dances exuberantly to the Macarena. Just a little further away, a live band tries to be heard over the party noise in a small bar. So, you might say there’s something for everyone—but that’s not entirely true…

Khao San Road is noisy and crowded; you won’t find much authentic Thai culture there. It’s not comparable to the rest of Bangkok or Thailand. Some people don’t like it at all. But the infamous backpacker street in Bangkok has gained such a reputation that visiting it has become a must when you’re in the city. It’s something you should probably see at least once, whether you love it or hate it! Luckily, nearby is the relaxed and charming Rambuttri Road, a welcome refuge if Khao San ever feels like too much!

Things to do by day at Khao San Road

During the day, Khao San Road is much quieter. There are some shops, bars, and food stalls of all kinds. People stroll along the street looking for a sarong, a selfie stick, a dry bag, the infamous elephant pants, fake brand-name clothing, or a (late) breakfast. It’s a convenient place to buy those typical traveler items. Others sleep off their hangovers by the pool or seek relief from the heat. Just a typical day on Khao San Road!

Things to do at night time

People watching—there are so many different people and cultures on Khao San Road. You can watch for hours. So, take a drink and see the world (literally) pass by.

Take a massage on the streets—you can get a foot massage for 250 baht. Because it’s on the street, you can enjoy it while …people-watching!

Let yourself go with the flow, grab a bucket (with alcoholic drinks in it), and dance on the street or in one of the clubs until the early hours.

What attractions are nearby Khao san road

Khao San Road and Rambuttri Road are within a 5-minute walk of each other; Rambuttri offers a quieter atmosphere with cozy cafés and street food. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are about 10–15 minutes away by taxi or tuk-tuk, and Wat Pho is around 15 minutes by taxi. Phra Arthit Pier and the Chao Phraya River are about a 10-minute walk, perfect for a boat ride. Wat Arun is a 10-minute walk from Tha Tien Pier, and the boat ride across the river takes 3 to 5 minutes.

How do you get to Khao San Road?

The street is easy to reach by taxi or tuk-tuk from downtown Bangkok. Public transport is a bit trickier, as there are no direct metro or skytrain stations nearby.
