The WOW of W Bangkok

After six months of travelling through Thailand, it was almost time to say goodbye to the country we love so dearly. At the start of our 2025/2026 adventure, we had already decided to do it in style: a few final nights at an exceptional hotel, W Bangkok.

The choice for W Bangkok was actually quite straightforward. The hotel is located in Silom-Sathorn, a neighbourhood we don’t often use as a base, but one we know well. We know the Mahanakhon building next door, where years ago we took our second series of wedding photos at six in the morning. We know Blue Elephant, the iconic restaurant and cooking school whose products are now sold in supermarkets worldwide. And we know Le Du Kaan, our favourite rooftop bar in Bangkok.

But why W specifically? Simple: modern design combined with outstanding service, several excellent restaurants, and The House on Sathorn, one of the best cocktail bars in all of Asia, tucked away in a restored nineteenth-century mansion between the skyscrapers.

On the grounds, we were immediately captivated by the contrast: that charming historic house next to the sleek, tall W tower. Once inside, standing before the striking reception with its dazzling backdrop, I thought: this is genuinely different from every luxury five-star hotel we have ever stayed in. And I was absolutely right.

Where is W Bangkok located?

W Bangkok is situated on North Sathorn Road, in the heart of Bangkok’s financial and business district. This is the side of the city that doesn’t always make it onto postcards: glass towers, wide boulevards and former embassy buildings, but also hidden alleyways with local restaurants and bars you only find if you know where to look.

The hotel is virtually adjacent to Chong Nonsi station on the BTS Silom Line, just a one-minute walk via a covered walkway. Convenient, because that puts the rest of Bangkok literally around the corner.

The Silom Line connects you via interchange station Siam to the Sukhumvit Line, and through that to virtually the entire city. Siam itself sits in the middle of an enormous luxury shopping district and is the gateway to the Em-District, where three large upscale shopping malls are within walking distance of each other.

From Chong Nonsi you can also quickly alight at Sala Daeng for a transfer to the MRT (metro), or at Saphan Taksin for the Chao Phraya River Express Boat towards the old city centre and the great temples. The skytrain and metro run daily from early morning until nearly midnight. How convenient can it get?

Arriving directly from the airport? From Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK), you can be at the hotel within an hour by taxi, Grab or Bolt.

Architecture & (interior) design

W Bangkok consists of two buildings, each a complete world of its own: a modern glass tower and a monumental mansion dating from 1889. The overarching narrative is called ‘Bejewelled Mystique’, with the tower representing the mysterious and the historic mansion representing the jewel.

W Bangkok officially opened on 7 December 2012. The interior of the tower was designed by SODA Thailand, while the heritage building was handled by American firm AvroKO. The 31-storey glass tower rises up behind The House on Sathorn: a neoclassical manor house that carries an extraordinary history.

The House on Sathorn spent its 135-year existence as a private residence, a luxury hotel and the Russian Embassy, before standing empty for over fifteen years. The renovation by AvroKO respects every original detail, right down to the small pig’s heads in the ornamental mouldings, a lucky charm of the first owner who was born in the year of the pig.

The interior

The interior of the modern tower breathes a completely different energy. Dark colours, gold accents, geometric patterns and artworks that hang on the walls like jewels. There are hidden details everywhere: from the beautiful old art at The House On Sathorn, to the blinking light panel with tuk-tuk lights by the lift, the Spiral Staircase, the impressive glass artwork by the spiral staircase, and even a crocodile in the breakfast room.

We found the contrast between both buildings truly unique. If you love architecture and design, W Bangkok absolutely has to be on your list.

W Bangkok’s atmosphere and guests

We found W Bangkok to be a remarkable and unique hotel, and that is reflected in the atmosphere and the guests it attracts. Despite the modern design of the main building, the vibe feels accessible and comfortable, with a touch of artistic flair.

Here and there you hear modern music, such as a laid-back track by our friends Kraak & Smaak from our own home city in the Netherlands. It was quite funny to hear that track at the exact moment we walked into the hotel. Another surprise came when we spotted two vintage Technics turntables in Bar Sathorn, complete with an Italian DJ who played as though disco had never gone away. Wonderful.

More atmosphere and music followed on our second day, with a pool party featuring a mix of hotel guests and stylish outside visitors who together made it a real celebration. W Bangkok clearly attracts a modern crowd that is young at heart. We spoke with expats, tourists who came specifically for the party, and many Bangkokians who simply know their way here.

The guests we met came from every corner of the world: Dubai, France, Germany, Singapore, China and Australia. Everyone is equally warm, and all drawn by the same thing: the design, the service, the facilities and of course The House on Sathorn.

All in all, we found the mix of guests and the relaxed atmosphere they brought with them wonderfully easy-going. That alone would be reason enough to return, but there are so many more reasons…

Whatever/Whenever Service & Hospitality

Whatever/Whenever: that is the promise of W Hotels worldwide, and thanks in part to GM Alexander and Assistant Director of Food & Beverage Eytan, it is delivered in Bangkok with flair. Western precision, Thai warmth, and a result that elevates hospitality to another level.

The warm staff greet you by name, anticipate your wishes before you even voice them, and respond quickly when anything needs adjusting. We experienced this not as a protocol but as a genuine attitude from the heart. Both in English and Thai, they communicate smoothly and naturally.

Two examples that illustrate this perfectly. By the pool, we told the member of staff responsible for that area that we love kanom krok, the sweet Thai coconut snack. Before we knew it, she came back with two concrete recommendations and a link to order online. “This is where I always order myself, I’ve just ordered a portion for you,” she said with a smile. Not long after, we received a small, delicious gift from that same cheerful Thai lady.

The second example touched us perhaps even more. During our stay, I mentioned that after six months of travelling I was planning to organise a small Thailand get-together for close friends back home. At check-out, I received a sealed bag containing a selection of Thai snacks from the bar, including crisps with tom yum seasoning. Uninvited, unexpected, and incredibly thoughtful.

It is therefore no surprise that so many online reviews rate the service here above average. Well deserved, in our view.

Room Types at W Bangkok

W Bangkok offers several room types, all housed in the 31-storey glass tower and all featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with city panoramas. The choice runs from the spacious standard room from 41 m² through various suites on the higher floors, all the way up to two ultra-luxurious penthouses.

In each type, the material usage is consistent: marble in the bathroom and high-pile carpet in the sleeping/living room. The semi-transparent colored glass walls that separate the spaces in a playful way without compromising the sense of spaciousness are a nice touch. A pleasing touch are the semi-transparent coloured glass partitions that separate the spaces playfully without compromising the sense of space.

Every room also features complimentary wifi, USB connections, a smart TV, iPod dock, whisper-quiet air conditioning, and coffee and tea facilities.

Our One Bedroom King Studio Suite, May 2026

Our suite on the 29th floor felt like something out of a design magazine: spacious, modern, and bathed in the light of the city below. The floor-to-ceiling windows let Bangkok’s skyline literally come inside. The WOW of W Bangkok.

The clever layout of the living and sleeping area gave us the feeling of a far larger suite than the 64 m² described for this room type. Just inside the entrance on the left is the bar: a mini-fridge stocked with drinks and snacks, a Nespresso machine, and a selection of spirits including a cocktail shaker set.

Further along, a large smart TV, and right in front of us a sleek modern desk with a view over Bangkok’s skyline. To the right, a generous corner sofa to sink into. On the coffee table, a selection of delicious sweet bites and a bottle of bubbles awaited us on arrival. Another WOW moment.

And then there is the heavenly kingsize W signature bed, with bedside tables on both sides holding an alarm clock, a Bose speaker, and a console for the lighting and air conditioning.

Behind the semi-transparent partition lies the hallway to the bathroom. It is almost as large as the bedroom itself, with a freestanding bath facing the city, a rain shower, double sinks, and Momo toiletries.

The freestanding bath sits directly in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, with a panoramic view of Bangkok as the backdrop. After a long evening wandering through Bangkok, that is exactly as wonderful as it sounds.

Something else that struck us: the soundproofing. Despite the central location on Sathorn Road, nights were quieter than expected. Our sleep comfort in the King Studio Suite was therefore excellent.

Facilities & Activities

WET Pool

W Bangkok’s pool, better known as the WET Pool, perfectly captures what the W brand stands for. This is not a pool where you swim lengths, but a place where design, music and atmosphere come together. We loved the artworks in and around the pool, including a number of floating bean bags that give it a playful character.

Located on the sixth floor, the outdoor pool measures 206 square metres and is surrounded by sun loungers, sofas, daybeds and cabanas: the WET Deck. Although the space is relatively compact, we always found a lovely spot to relax. The clever layout with different levels and seating options keeps things playful and never cramped.

What makes WET truly special are the underwater LED lights and speakers. Once you dive under, the music simply continues beneath the surface. Above water you enjoy laid-back electronic music from the resident DJs; underwater, an almost dreamlike, muffled soundtrack emerges. An unexpected detail that fits the W Hotels aesthetic perfectly.

At the entrance you will also find a bar featuring a striking mural by Alex Face, one of Bangkok’s best-known street artists. We ordered a refreshing WET Deck Sangria with sparkling white wine, peach, elderflower syrup, apple, lime, ginger ale and rosemary. A wonderful W take on a Spanish classic.

The view from the WET Deck adds to the experience. You look out over Bangkok’s skyline, with tall buildings rising above the city, the well-known Chong Nonsi pedestrian bridge, and the BTS Skytrain gliding past in the distance. Especially at the end of the afternoon, when the sun slowly sets and the city lights up, the atmosphere here is simply wonderful.

FIT Gym

W Bangkok’s fitness facility fits seamlessly with the hotel’s lifestyle identity. Not a massive gym, but a modern and well-equipped space spread across two rooms where you can effortlessly complete a full workout, day or night.

The space is fitted with Technogym equipment: treadmills, cross-trainers and bikes with individual LCD screens, complemented by two large 46-inch TVs on the ceiling. For strength training there are weight machines, free weights and yoga mats. Towels, water, ginger shots and earphones are complimentary for all hotel guests.

FIT is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and free for guests. And honestly: after an evening at Paii or Bar Sathorn, a visit to the gym the next morning did not feel like a bad idea at all. We trained nice and early, with the finest view of Bangkok’s waking skyline as extra motivation.

AWAY Spa

For those who need some rest and recovery after a day in Bangkok, the AWAY Spa offers a welcome retreat. The full menu runs from classic Thai massages and facials to aromatherapy and hydrotherapy, all carried out in a peaceful setting that contrasts sharply with the buzzing energy of the rest of the hotel.

Sound Healing

Rather than a massage, we chose to take part in the Sound Healing session on Saturday afternoon in The House on Sathorn. A surprising complimentary activity offered by W Bangkok to its guests.

The session begins with a few simple yoga exercises, after which klankschalen, resonant tones and soothing frequencies invite you to let go for a while. The contrast with the rest of the hotel is striking: where W Bangkok normally runs on energy, music and social interaction, sound healing offers a moment of stillness and reflection.

What struck us was how well this fits the broader vision of the hotel. W Bangkok is not only about cocktails, design and entertainment, but also pays attention to wellbeing and mental relaxation. A lovely balance between action and recovery, in exactly the place where you might least expect it.

Amazing food and superb cocktails at W Bangkok!

W Bangkok houses an impressive mix of dining and drinking venues, each with its own character and following. The Kitchen Table is the main restaurant: an all-day bistro serving one of the best breakfast buffets in Bangkok. The culinary crown jewel, however, is Paii, the modern Thai restaurant in the historic House on Sathorn. In that same building you will find Bar Sathorn, a cocktail bar that made its debut at number 48 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2025.

The Kitchen Table

The Kitchen Table, W Bangkok’s all-day restaurant, is an atmospheric and contemporary dining space with open kitchens where you can drop in all day, from an early breakfast to a late lunch or informal dinner.

The concept revolves around experience: fresh seafood, premium meats, international cheeses and Thai classics alternate in a setting as carefully curated as the rest of the hotel. Not your typical hotel restaurant, but a place that Bangkokians from outside the hotel know how to find as well. During lunch it fills up with business guests from the neighbourhood, and that is a considerable compliment.

The weekend offering takes things up another level. The Saturday Brunch is celebrated as one of Bangkok’s best: an extensive buffet with fresh seafood on ice, grilled premium meats and free-flow wines and cocktails, in a lively atmosphere with open kitchens and a crowd that is clearly up for it. On Saturday evenings there is a dinner buffet in the same spirit, with ingredients from around the world alongside local and seasonal specialities.

For business lunches, there is a weekday Lunch Break Buffet with sushi, sashimi, grilled meats, fresh salads and mocktails. Fast, polished, and without compromising on quality.

Breakfast at The Kitchen Table

Breakfast at W Bangkok is served on the second floor, where The Kitchen Table is located. An international and contemporary buffet with attention to the small details. The moment you walk in, it is immediately clear how much care has gone into the presentation and quality.

One of the first highlights on the way to your seat is the bread and pastry section. Freshly baked muffins in flavours such as rum raisin and white chocolate with raspberry, alongside delicious biscuits, pastries and other sweet treats, complemented by a range of breads. You have not even sat down yet and it already looks promising.

For guests with specific dietary requirements, there are gluten-free options, something that is still far from standard at many breakfast buffets in Asia.

But breakfast here is not only about sweet things. The warm section offers a wonderful mix of international and Asian dishes: dim sum, congee, cereals, various dairy products, fresh fruit and juices. A pleasant surprise are the Hong Kong-style fried noodles, which you do not come across at every hotel breakfast. And for something fresh and festive: at the DIY Mimosa bar you mix your own prosecco with freshly squeezed orange juice.

The Thai kitchen also gets plenty of attention. During our visit we found yellow curry with roti, khao soi with chicken, local Isaan dishes and various Thai snacks, among other things. The menu changes daily, so there is always something new to discover.

Simply book a room at W Bangkok and discover for yourself how good this breakfast is. Words truly fall short here.

W does Brunch

If you happen to be in Bangkok on the first or third Saturday of the month, you are in luck. That is when W Does Brunch takes place at The Kitchen Table: from 12:30 to 15:30, an extensive buffet with free-flow cocktails in an atmosphere that sits somewhere between a festive dinner and a lovely get-together.

The offering is impressively broad. At the seafood on ice, oysters, mussels, blue crab and large prawns await you. The carving section offers slow-roasted Australian beef and a salmon wellington. If you are into smoke and BBQ, the Tipsy Cow section has you covered with ribs, a whole smoked chicken, ten-hour Wagyu brisket dry rub and a glazed ham.

In between: a paella station, a DIY Caesar Salad, pasta of your choice prepared in a Parmesan wheel, homemade ramen with tonkatsu broth, sushi and sashimi of tuna, salmon and hamachi, and a cheese and charcuterie section that would not be out of place in a French fromagerie.

For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert section deserves at least three rounds: from W Egg Tart and Sicilian Cannoli to macarons, chocolate eclairs and an ice cream station with eight flavours.

The cocktails are free-flow and seriously good: a Boba Punch with Thai tea and boba jelly, three variations on the gin and tonic with local flavours such as jasmine, lychee and kaffir lime, and classics such as an Aperol Spritz or Espresso Martini.

W Lounge

Alongside all the restaurants and bars, W Bangkok also houses the W Lounge: a stylish social gathering place where culture, glamour and mixology come together. Vermouth takes centre stage here, incorporated into a cocktail menu that goes well beyond the standard lounge offering.

The atmosphere is simply very cool: a place to ease into the evening, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy a good drink in a setting that looks as good as the rest of the hotel.

The House on Sathorn: Restaurant Paii and Bar Sathorn, One of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, Under One Roof

Those who stay at W Bangkok quickly discover that the neighbouring manor house is far more than a pretty facade. The House on Sathorn, a neoclassical monument from 1889 that once served as the Russian Embassy, draws attention immediately. And rightly so.

We were so taken with the restaurant Paii, Bar Sathorn and the historic building itself that one article simply was not enough. Our Conclusion

W Bangkok is not just a hotel. It is an experience that stays with you, from the first contrast on arrival to the last drink at Bar Sathorn. The combination of the modern glass tower with the historic grandeur of The House on Sathorn is unique in Bangkok, perhaps in all of Asia.

But what truly sets W Bangkok apart from the many other luxury hotels in the city is the consistency. The design is WOW. The combination of modern and classic architecture is WOW. The service is WOW. The breakfast, brunch and dinner are WOW. And the cocktails from one of the best bars in Asia? Also WOW.

The House on Sathorn, about which we had heard and read so much, exceeded our expectations. Paii: refined, creative and with a genuine love for the Thai culinary tradition. Bar Sathorn is a destination in its own right, rightfully rewarded with position 48 in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025. The WET Pool, the FIT Gym, the sound healing on Saturday afternoon: every element of this hotel is considered and filled with character.

After six months in Thailand, W Bangkok was our final stop. And honestly? We could not have wished for anything better. This is exactly the kind of farewell you want: one where, at check-out, you are already thinking about when you will be back.
