Since 1970, it has been one of the most iconic addresses in the Thai capital, and after a complete redevelopment, it reopened its doors in 2024. More modern, more elegant, and with spectacular views over Lumpini Park, yet still carrying the same soul that made it legendary.

We spent four days in this reimagined icon and discovered how tradition and contemporary design come together here seamlessly. The lobby and interiors, designed by acclaimed architect André Fu, set the tone from the moment you arrive. In the rooms, five-metre-wide windows frame the green park like a living painting. During the day, you can walk straight into Lumpini Park from the hotel; in the evening, sip cocktails high above the city skyline at Spire Rooftop Bar or savour authentic Thai flavours at Pavilion Restaurant.

What made our stay truly special was the balance between past and present. The hotel feels simultaneously legendary and fresh, as if Bangkok’s history is still tangible here, but translated into a contemporary five-star experience.

Where in Bangkok is Dusit Thani located?

Dusit Thani Bangkok is located at one of the best locations in the city. The hotel sits at the intersection of Silom Road and Rama IV Road, directly opposite Lumpini Park — Bangkok’s most famous green space. Right next to the hotel you’ll find Dusit Arun Park, an elevated sky park, while the newly opened Dusit Central Park shopping complex and the modern ONE Bangkok development are both just steps away. In short, this is a dream location: at the heart of the business district, with views of nature and parkland on one side, and the buzz of restaurants, shops, and coffee spots on the other.

How to get there?

From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the easiest option is a taxi, Grab, or Bolt — expect roughly 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. If you prefer public transport, the BTS Skytrain drops you at Sala Daeng station, while the MRT stops at Lumpini station. Both are around a ten-minute walk from the hotel.

The history of Dusit Thani Bangkok

The story of Dusit Thani begins with a woman of remarkable vision. In 1949, Thanphuying Chanut Piyaoui opened her first hotel, the Princess Hotel on Charoen Krung Road. This accommodation was a true pioneer that was among the first in Bangkok to offer a swimming pool, air conditioning, and modern amenities. Inspired by the legendary Hotel Okura in Tokyo, she went on to commission the iconic Dusit Thani, designed by Japanese architect Yozo Shibata, with one clear philosophy: combine international standards with the timeless hospitality of Thai culture.

The name itself was drawn from history. Dusit Thani was a reference to the utopian miniature city that King Rama VI built in the 1920s as an experiment in democracy — Dusit meaning the fourth level of Buddhist heaven, Thani simply meaning “city.” Together: a city in the heavens.

On 27 February 1970, Dusit Thani Bangkok officially opened its doors, it was an instant icon! The 23-storey building with its distinctive triangular cross-section and golden spire, inspired by the Phra Prang of Wat Arun, was at the time the tallest building in Bangkok at 82 metres, a beacon of progress rising above a city that was still largely low-rise. The hotel broke every mould of what a hotel could be, introducing a discotheque, a ballroom, cultural performances, and a rooftop restaurant, all entirely new to Bangkok’s social scene. From royal receptions to jazz evenings in the lobby, this was the place where Bangkok discovered modern elegance. It went on to become the country’s first five-star hotel.

After nearly five decades, the original Dusit Thani Bangkok closed its doors on 5 January 2019. Rather than renovate, the owners chose to rebuild entirely. In partnership with property developer Central Pattana, the ambitious Dusit Central Park project took shape — a 46-billion-baht mixed-use development combining residences, offices, and retail. Heritage was central to the vision: the golden spire, the teak ceilings from the Benjarong restaurant, and the murals from the Heritage Floor Hall were carefully preserved and integrated into the new design, with guidance from experts at Silpakorn University.

On 27 September 2024, the new Dusit Thani Bangkok opened its doors: 39 floors, 257 rooms, each with views over Lumpini Park — smaller, more contemporary, but with the very same soul.

Architecture & (interior) design

The building itself

The new building was designed by Dragon Company Limited, a Thai collaboration between Architects 49 International Limited and OMA Asia (Hong Kong) Limited. The architecture pays tribute to the original: the golden spire has been preserved, but is now encased within a new spire three times its size. The design has a translucent quality, allowing the original golden spire to remain visible from within. The building now rises 39 floors, up from the original 23 and features a golden façade rooted in feng shui principles.

The interior: André Fu Studio

For the interior design, Dusit turned to renowned Hong Kong designer André Fu, known for projects including Claridge’s in London and The Upper House in Hong Kong. Fu described his approach as “relaxed luxury”: together with the Dusit team, he immersed himself in the history of the original hotel to translate its soul into a contemporary high-rise.

The triple-height lobby draws inspiration from traditional Thai pavilions, featuring a dramatic waterfall with a layered geometric composition. Freestanding bronze screens — hand-forged by Dong Sculpture — are adorned with intricate woven patterns, set against a warm palette of oak panelling, antique bronze, and fresh accents of mauve, sage green, and teal blue.

Preserving the original

Two antique pillars from the original Benjarong restaurant — painted by master muralist Paiboon Suwannakudt — now flank the entrance as quiet witnesses to the hotel’s past. The murals from the Heritage Floor Hall were saved in their entirety during demolition, relocated to the new building, and meticulously restored by experts from Silpakorn University. The nine-step waterfall also returns, carrying deep symbolic meaning: three steps at the top representing the traibhumi, and six below for the six levels of heaven. You can admire it in Pavilion Restaurant — where guests come for breakfast, but where we also enjoyed a wonderful dinner.

Room design

The most distinctive feature of the rooms is the five-metre-wide floor-to-ceiling window in a single pane of glass, offering uninterrupted views over Lumpini Park. The design evokes the spirit of the traditional Thai sala asai — a resting place for travellers — with daybeds spanning the full width of the cantilevered window.

Fu composed a palette of sage, celadon green, champagne, and gold, complemented by warm oak panelling. The furniture features soft, rounded forms as a contemporary interpretation of traditional Thai craftsmanship. The headboards are hand-woven by local Thai artisans, echoing the murals of the original hotel.

It’s atmosphere and guests

The atmosphere at Dusit Thani Bangkok can best be described as quiet grandeur. This is not an ostentatious display of wealth, but a place that makes you feel immediately — and effortlessly — that you are somewhere truly special.

One of the things we loved about this hotel is that you don’t need to be a guest to enjoy it. We met a friend there — the owner of the fantastic Fatboy Izakaya — and spent a long afternoon talking about Bangkok, Thai culture, and the differences between Eastern and European hospitality. It felt entirely natural. That is the kind of place Dusit Thani is: a genuine gathering point for people who appreciate good conversation as much as good design.

High above the city at Spire Rooftop Bar, the same energy plays out with a view. During our four days we quickly noticed that the guests are as diverse as Bangkok itself — which is exactly as it should be. Long before the new hotel reopened, Dusit Thani was already a social and business hub, and that legacy clearly lives on.

The new Dusit draws international business travellers with more than 5,000 square metres of meeting and event space, but equally attracts culturally curious luxury travellers, design-minded Thai guests, and local Bangkokians stopping in for dinner at Pavilion Restaurant or cocktails at 1970 Bar. It is a hotel that belongs to the city as much as it belongs to its guests.

Two window walls flood this room with natural light, making it one of the most open and airy spaces in the hotel. Bay-window seating and Thai-inspired décor create an atmosphere that is as stylish as it is relaxing.

A refined room with uninterrupted views over Lumpini Park. Thai design elements set the tone across a polished 50 m² living space, complemented by a spacious marble bathroom with freestanding bathtub.

Premier Corner — 50 m²

Panoramic views through two window walls make this corner room feel exceptionally spacious. Elegantly finished with Thai-inspired elements and modern technology, available with either one king bed or two double beds.

Our Deluxe Room in February 2025

We stayed in a Deluxe Room on the 21st floor and were welcomed immediately with a personal card, fresh Thai fruit, and chocolates. A warm touch — but the most impressive welcome came from something else entirely.

The moment we entered, the curtains opened automatically and Lumpini Park appeared right beneath us, with the Bangkok skyline stretching into the distance. City and nature in a single glance.

Bedroom & living area

Entering the room, you first encounter a spacious walk-in wardrobe with built-in lighting — a thoughtful and elegant start, with enough space for everything from carry-on luggage to evening wear. A large mirror doubles the light and sense of space before you step into the main room.

From there, the room unfolds like a painting. The king-size bed dominates the centre, flanked by warm wall lights and a richly upholstered headboard with subtle golden tones. Soft celadon-green cushions at the foot of the bed quietly echo the Thai design language woven throughout the space.

But the true highlight is the enormous panoramic window stretching across the entire width of the room, framing the green expanse of Lumpini Park with Bangkok’s skyscrapers as the backdrop. A long sofa runs along the window — the perfect spot to begin the day with a cup of coffee or tea while watching the city slowly come to life.

Bathroom

Sliding doors from the bedroom lead into the bathroom, fully clad in warm grey-beige marble that feels both luxurious and quietly calming.

The centrepiece is the freestanding bathtub — a large oval matte-white tub with a teak bath tray and bath products from Dusit’s own brand Devarana Wellness. Opposite stands a spacious walk-in shower in the same marble style, sleek and minimalistic, with built-in shelves for the Devarana Wellness toiletries. A his-and-hers sink on an oak console with open shelving below is topped by two elegant mirrors with subtle Thai-inspired arches. Soft white bathrobes hang on the wall as the finishing touch.

The entire space feels like a private spa — thoughtfully designed and just as luxurious as the rest of the room.

Pool, Fitness and Spa at Dustin Thani Bangkok

Amazing Infinity Pool

On the fifth floor, an infinity pool shimmers with views over Lumpini Park and the Bangkok skyline. The sun loungers are among the finest we have encountered at any luxury property — and as evening falls and the city lights begin to reflect in the water, the scene becomes almost magical. This is something you simply have to experience for yourself.

Next to the pool is a bar where you can order food and drinks. We ordered two mocktails, one of which was far too sweet for our taste — though guests can help themselves to complimentary water, which came in handy for diluting it a little.

Fitness

Also on the fifth floor, right beside the pool, is a spacious fitness centre equipped with modern Technogym machines. Available 24/7 with a full range of cardio and strength training equipment, it is perfect for anyone who wants to keep up their routine between street food adventures.

Devarana Wellness Spa

Ilonka chose the 60-minute Body Contour massage at the Devarana Wellness Spa — and she loved every moment of it. The therapist was warm and clearly highly skilled, using aromatic oils and firm, targeted techniques that left Ilonka feeling genuinely relaxed from the very first minutes. The treatment room was beautifully designed: modern yet full of atmosphere.

Ilonka tends to get cold during massages, and the therapist noticed immediately and switched off the air conditioning without being asked. A small detail, but one that meant a great deal.

After the treatment, the therapist showed her a separate room dedicated to sound bowl massages. The atmosphere in that space was extraordinary — something we both want to experience on our next visit. As a final touch, Ilonka was served a cup of Miang Kham herbal tea alongside a small selection of Thai snacks, both savoury bites and sweet candied pieces. The therapist even played the instruments briefly — not as part of the treatment, but simply because she noticed how captivated Ilonka was by the room and the bowls. A genuinely thoughtful gesture.

The Devarana Wellness Spa is more than a hotel spa. It is a holistic wellness concept where traditional Thai treatments meet modern relaxation — and where the human touch makes all the difference.

Pavilion Restaurant

Pavilion is the all-day dining restaurant at Dusit Thani Bangkok, situated on the ground floor of the hotel. Known for authentic Thai and Cantonese cuisine with a contemporary twist, the kitchen is led by Chef Rosarin Sriprathum. We had breakfast here every morning and also had the pleasure of trying dinner from the extensive menu. The team is genuinely service-oriented and reflects everything Dusit Thani stands for.

Breakfast at Pavilion Restaurant

Breakfast is served across several spacious areas, though it can get quite busy during peak morning hours. We preferred the terrace overlooking the legendary waterfall fountain — calmer, more atmospheric, and a lovely way to start the day.

Water is poured as soon as you sit down, and coffee or tea can be ordered à la carte immediately. The buffet itself is extensive and international: fresh fruit, hot Thai and Western dishes, bread, salads, and even sushi. The sushi stands out — particularly the fresh-tasting wasabi, which is rarely encountered at a hotel breakfast. Small details occasionally fell short, such as the difference between cappuccino and flat white not always being clear, or teaspoons occasionally missing with the tea. But overall it is a very complete breakfast with plenty of choice and a pleasant atmosphere to ease into the day.

Dinner at Pavilion Restaurant

Dinner at Pavilion makes clear that this restaurant aims to be far more than a typical hotel dining venue.

The evening opens with small starters that set the tone immediately: warm peanuts with miso and pickled horseradish with soy and sesame. The salty-sweet peanuts and the slightly sour, spicy horseradish work surprisingly well together — almost like a subtle palate cleanser.

A series of beautifully presented small dishes follow on modern Luzerne tableware. We begin with dim sum, including a shrimp dumpling with Sichuan XO chili sauce that genuinely impresses — filled with juicy shrimp and delivering a perfect balance of sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy. A steamed bun with moo deng (Thai barbecue pork) follows: soft, slightly sweet, and deeply comforting.

Next, bold Thai flavours take centre stage with a pomelo salad and grilled scallops. The scallops are perfectly cooked with a delicate texture, glazed with tamarind and shallots for a pleasant sweetness, while finely chopped chili and garlic add heat and depth. The pomelo brings a fresh citrus lift. Portion sizes are just right — generous without being excessive.

For the main course we choose a green curry with chicken, softened slightly with extra coconut milk to round out the spice. The chicken is tender, served alongside golden-brown roti. We also try a northern Thai classic from Chiang Mai: Gaeng Hung Lay with Kurobuta pork — slow-braised to incredible tenderness, with a warm aromatic yellow curry as its base.

Throughout the meal the flavours are consistently strong, the presentation elegant, and the passion of Chef Rosarin and her team evident in every dish.

For dessert we hand the decision to the team. “What do you recommend?” we ask. Their answer: Inthanin Nga Kee Mon with young coconut. Ask for it — you will not regret it.

Other Restaurants & Bars

Beyond Pavilion, Dusit Thani Bangkok offers a culinary highlight called Cannubi by Umberto Bombana. This is a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant led by the celebrated three-Michelin-star chef Umberto Bombana. 

For a more casual option, Dusit Gourmet is the perfect spot to enjoy coffee, pastries, and light lunches, conveniently located between the hotel and the shopping mall.The hotel also has two exceptional bars. Our opinion

After four days at the new Dusit Thani Bangkok, we understand why this hotel has been a legend for decades. It is rare for a hotel with such a rich history to completely reinvent itself without losing its soul — yet that is exactly what happened here.

The views over Lumpini Park from our room on the 21st floor, the peaceful breakfast terrace at Pavilion, the refined Thai cuisine at dinner, and the relaxed atmosphere at the pool create a stay that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.

What truly makes this hotel special is the combination of iconic heritage and modern elegance. The golden spire from 1970 shines again above a contemporary building of glass and light, while inside, the warm Thai hospitality and design traditions remain present in every detail.
