Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort: True Retreat Vibes at Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River

After a few wonderful days at the neighbouring Avani+ Riverside Bangkok, it was time for the more classic and, in our opinion, even more luxurious sibling further along the riverbank: Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. A place we already knew, since the Manohra Cruise, one of the most beautiful dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya, departs from this resort’s own pier. But actually staying here was something we had never done. Until now.

The arrival could not have been easier. From Avani+ we walked to the Anantara Riverside reception in just under five minutes, no Grab, no Skytrain, no hassle. We left our luggage at Avani+, who made sure everything was transferred neatly. “Now this is what I call comfortable,” said Ilonka with a smile.

At the reception, cold towels and a refreshing welcome drink were waiting for us, the scent of jasmine drifting softly through the open lobby. The guest relations manager welcomed us warmly, and after just a few sentences came the announcement every guest secretly hoped for: “We’ve upgraded you to the Anantara Riverfront Suite.”

We had watched YouTube videos of this resort months earlier and knew exactly which suite she meant. One word came to mind: heavenly.

Below you will find everything about our stay, our personal experiences, and why this ab-so-lute-ly wonderful resort on the Chao Phraya River is, in our opinion, one of the best addresses in Bangkok.

Where in Bangkok is Anantara Riverside located?

The resort sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya, in a spot that feels both reasonably central and remarkably calm. A rare combination in Bangkok.

The complimentary shuttle boat runs daily from 08:00 to 23:15 and takes you to Sathorn Pier at BTS Saphan Taksin station and to ICONSIAM, the enormous luxury shopping centre less than fifteen minutes away by water.

From Saphan Taksin, Silom, Siam and Sukhumvit are easily reachable by Skytrain. That fifteen-minute boat ride is an experience in itself: the river, the boats, the skyline on both banks. And the best part? It comes completely free when you stay here.

Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are accessible within half an hour by water, with a transfer at Sathorn Pier. Asiatique the Riverfront is just around the corner. Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport are normally reachable within an hour, though Bangkok’s notorious traffic always has the final say.

Architecture & (interior) design

What struck us immediately when we first stepped onto the grounds of Anantara Riverside was the calm. In a city full of towers, this resort deliberately chooses low-rise buildings, spread across no fewer than eleven hectares of lush green land along the banks of the Chao Phraya. The name resort makes total sense: this five-star property feels more like an island resort on Koh Samui than a city hotel in Bangkok.

Three separate buildings form the heart of the complex, connected by winding pathways, small bridges and tropical gardens you can explore at any time of day. There are hidden corners where you can feed the fish, quiet spots to gather your thoughts and enough greenery to make you forget you are in the middle of a metropolis of ten million people.

The gardens are a world of their own. Lush, colourful and perfectly balanced between nature and comfort. After a walk you can dive into the pool, or settle onto a terrace with a drink and watch the Chao Phraya drift by. After our first step on the grounds we knew instantly: this feels different from every other address in Bangkok where we have ever stayed.

Inside the buildings, rooms are fitted with floors of solid makha wood, a local tropical hardwood with warm brown tones, combined with rich Thai silk in deep orange-red and gold. Bathrooms are clad in marble, many equipped with a rain shower and a freestanding bath, with sliding doors that connect the bathroom seamlessly to the bedroom. Together it all feels like a contemporary ode to the kingdom: unmistakably Thai in every detail.

The architecture is purely Thai: warm earth tones, teak details, rooflines referencing the classical temple architecture of the kingdom and a strikingly beautiful open lobby.

Atmosphere & Guests

During our stay we immediately noticed how relaxed and civilised the atmosphere was. Every guest we encountered was friendly and respectful. A large Indian group that had booked the hotel for a wedding, a lovely Belgian couple just as in love with Thailand as we are, an American family visiting the country for the first time. Each of them are great people to sit next to at the pool or bump into at the breakfast buffet.

The resort attracts a wonderful mix: couples on honeymoon, families with teenagers lying lazily by the pool reading, business travellers grabbing a long riverside weekend and seasoned Thailand travellers who know exactly what they will find here and keep coming back for that reason. No loud music at eight in the morning, no aggressive sunbed-reserving culture. Just guests who are a perfect fit for the place: relaxed, polite and genuinely pleasant company.

The fact that the resort is large enough to give everyone their own corner certainly helps. But the tone is set above all by the Thai hospitality of the staff. Minor Hotels, under which both Anantara and the neighbouring Avani+ Riverside fall, understands better than most what real service feels like. Not forced, not exaggerated, but genuinely warm. And you notice it. We felt at home from the very first moment.

Hospitality and exceptional service

Service at Anantara Riverside is not something you have to ask for. It is offered before you realise you need it. The staff speak excellent English, work with that unmistakable Thai warmth and know how to combine it with genuine professionalism. A rare combination you recognise immediately at the better addresses in Thailand.

Upon arrival, all guests receive the Rod Nam Dum Hua, the traditional Thai welcome ritual in which fragrant water is poured into the guest’s palms as a sign of respect and blessing. A gesture older than the city of Bangkok itself, and yet here it feels like a sincere welcome rather than a show for tourists.

But the real service lies in the details. A special mention for our friend Mark, the F&B Manager, and his team. I had mentioned in passing that it was Ilonka’s birthday. Not long after we had settled into our room, a cheerfully giggling pair of staff members appeared at our door with a personally handwritten card, a birthday cake and a small gift. They even sang for her. Ilonka’s face: priceless.

And then there was this. At breakfast we asked whether they had passion fruit. A few minutes later a large plate appeared on the table. The next morning, without us having said another word about it, it was simply there again. Just like that. That is no longer service, that is attention. And that is precisely what makes the difference between a good hotel and a resort you never want to leave.

Rooms and Suites at Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort

Anantara Riverside offers 281 rooms and 95 suites spread across three low-rise buildings. Every room has a workspace, good air conditioning, a flatscreen TV of at least 40 inches, free fast wifi, a minibar, a Nespresso machine and a safe. Bathrooms are spacious and equipped with both a shower and a freestanding bath.

The Deluxe Rooms are the entry-level option and already offer a generous 38 square metres of living comfort with garden views. The Deluxe River View Rooms and Deluxe Riverfront Rooms look directly onto the Chao Phraya and are worth every baht of the upgrade: the views of the river, the longtail boats and the temples on the opposite bank are something you will not forget quickly. The Junior River View Suites and Penthouse Suites offer generous living spaces with separate sitting areas and panoramic river views.

Suite guests have access to the Kasara Lounge, a private lounge where snacks and drinks are served in the afternoon. We did not have time for it ourselves, but when we walked past it looked very tempting. We will definitely be back, if only for the Kasara Lounge. Good enough reason.

Our Anantara Riverfront Suite in April 2026

We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Anantara Riverfront Suite in late April 2026, and what a suite it was. Not just sweeping views over the Chao Phraya, but also over the lush gardens of the resort. A combination that genuinely makes you stop and take it all in every single morning.

Because that is how each morning began for us: coffee on the balcony, the river shimmering softly in the early light and the silhouettes of boats already moving steadily past before seven o’clock. That is the privilege of a room or suite with river views.

The suite itself was generous in size, well lit and decorated in warm Thai tones that put you immediately at ease. The bathroom was equally impressive: spacious, luxurious and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The air conditioning worked silently and effectively, the sound insulation was excellent. Noise from the corridor or nearby rooms? Not audible. The wifi was fast and stable, even on the balcony.

Living Room

The living room forms the heart of the suite and feels exactly as you hope: spacious, comfortable and surprisingly practical. The warm wooden floor sets the tone immediately. A dining area, a large three-seater sofa, two armchairs and a generous workspace mean you could comfortably spend extended time here. “We could just live here,” I said to Ilonka at some point. She looked at me with a look that said: I am seriously considering it.

Every comfort has been thought through: a well-stocked minibar, a wine cooler, coffee and tea facilities and a luxury coffee machine that makes a proper cappuccino. From both the dining area and the workspace you have access to the balcony, with views over the pool, the tropical gardens and the river. That resort feeling hits you every single time you slide open the door.

A small but lovely extra: a separate guest toilet with washbasin, keeping the bedroom and bathroom completely private. It is those considered details that make the difference between a large room and a suite that actually feels like a suite.

Bedroom

The bedroom gave us exactly the rest we needed. During our stay we had also made the trip to Phra Pradaeng for Wan Lai, the final day of Songkran in this lively Bangkok district, more than two weeks after our first Songkran day in the city. An absolutely incredible experience, but when we returned to our suite that evening we were completely exhausted. We slept like logs in that kingsize bed. Deep, long and glorious.

The wardrobe was large and well organised, with a generous safe, ironing equipment, a yoga mat, soft slippers and thick bathrobes. The large armchair served mainly as a strategic landing zone for my clothing and daypack, but fair enough, that is a function too. What I genuinely appreciated were the USB-C ports beside the bed and the modern alarm clock with integrated charging. It sounds like a small detail, but when you travel with multiple devices every day you know how much it matters when a hotel has thought of this.

The absolute highlight of the bedroom was the second balcony. Direct views over the Chao Phraya, just metres from the water. During the day we sat there lazily watching the busy river traffic; in the evening the lights of Bangkok created a backdrop that no bar or restaurant can compete with. Completely free, from your own bedroom.

Bathroom

The bathroom is stylishly finished in natural stone and feels well-appointed and complete. A spacious walk-in shower with rain shower and excellent water pressure. The toiletries are from Anantara’s own line and smell of lemongrass and jasmine, exactly the kind of scent that puts you instantly in holiday mode. The marble his & her vanity unit offers more than enough storage, complemented by a magnifying mirror and scales. Honest as always: the bath is somewhat narrower than you might expect in a suite of this level. But otherwise nothing is missing, and that is ultimately what counts.

Facilities

The resort is so extensive that you could easily spend several days here without ever stepping outside. Well, perhaps a quick trip to the neighbours at Avani+ Riverside Bangkok for a visit to SEEN or one of the other venues, or a stop at Riverside Plaza where you can now find the brand-new TOPS Supermarket. But otherwise? Everything is right here.

Tennis courts, a wonderful pool with swimup bar, a separate children’s pool and a jacuzzi. A modern, fully equipped gym, a Muay Thai ring, yoga classes in the garden and the Chang Noi Kids’ Club, named after the Little Elephant from Thai folklore, offering daily activities for the youngest guests. And then there is the extensive wellness and spa centre, which we cover separately in its own review.

Fitness

The gym at Anantara Riverside surprised us pleasantly, and that is an understatement. This is not a hotel gym where you reluctantly spend half an hour on the treadmill. The space is large, well ventilated and equipped with an extensive selection of Technogym equipment, the Italian premium brand you find at the world’s finest five-star hotels. On the cardio side multiple treadmills, bikes and cross-trainers; on the strength side dumbbells in all weights, weight benches, leg press, chin-up stations, cable machines and various core equipment. Serious athletes will find nothing missing here.

What truly sets the facilities apart from a standard hotel gym is the separate studio for private and group training sessions, complemented by multiple Reformer Pilates machines. Something you rarely if ever find at a city hotel. The resort organises complimentary group classes including HIIT, Power Step and aerobics, and additionally yoga, Tai Chi and personal training can be booked in advance. Those who prefer to fight rather than stretch can head to the Muay Thai ring under the guidance of genuine professionals. A private lesson costs around 2,500 THB per hour and is worth every baht.

Pool

The pool is exactly what you hope to find at a resort like this, and remarkable even by Bangkok standards. Large, tropical and complete. A jacuzzi to sink into, a swimup bar for a cold drink without having to leave the water, a separate shallow children’s pool and plenty of comfortable sun loungers with parasols for those who prefer shade over the Thai sun.

Anantara Wellness and Spa

Anantara Wellness and Spa deserves a story of its own, and we have written one. Other Facilities

For families the resort is equally ideal. The Chang Noi Kids’ Club offers daily activities for children of multiple ages. There is a separate children’s pool and babysitting services are available on request. Even pets are welcome at Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort: dogs and cats may accompany guests to the lobby and outdoor areas and are welcomed with a small gift, a personal mat, and food and water bowls.

There are also the renovated tennis courts, two in total, where you can enjoy a good rally. More of a kitchen person? Learn to prepare some of Thailand’s finest dishes at Spice Spoons, the resort’s cooking school.

Food & Drinks

With more than fifteen dining and drinking venues spread across the Avani and Anantara grounds, it almost sounds too good to be true. But at Anantara Riverside it is simply reality. Every restaurant and every bar has its own identity, its own audience and its own moment of the day when it comes into its own.

The Market is the resort’s buffet restaurant, with extensive breakfast and dinner buffets along the riverside. We personally found the breakfast better than at Avani+, and that comes down entirely to the location and atmosphere. You can sit outside with the river right there and the presentation of the dishes is just that little bit different. The range of Asian and international dishes is enormous and the quality is solid.

Sala Lakorn is an absolute must and essentially essential viewing if you are staying at Avani+ or Anantara Riverside. Theatrical and cultural performances in a stunning setting. Book in advance because this is an experience you do not want to miss. More on that below.

Trader Vic’s serves Polynesian, Pacific Rim and Thai dishes in an atmospheric themed setting. Brio is the resort’s Italian restaurant, which we honestly have not visited yet but which is firmly on the list for next time.

In between we had an iced coffee at Mocha & Muffins Riverside, a few mocktails at the pool at Loy Nam Bar and at Longtail River Bar and Lounge we ordered several wonderful Thai-inspired cocktails at the water’s edge. After an unforgettable evening at Sala Lakorn we ended the night with a nightcap at the Elephant Bar, a colonial cocktail bar with dimmed lighting and the perfect atmosphere for one last drink.

And then there is the Manohra Dinner Cruise, a dinner cruise on a beautifully restored antique rice barge along the Chao Phraya. We took it in March 2024 and it was fantastic. A return visit is planned for 2027 or 2028, because experiences like this deserve a revisit.

Some of our favourite dining and drinking experiences in this part of Bangkok did not even take place on the Anantara grounds themselves. At the neighbouring Avani+ Riverside Bangkok, just a short walk away, we visited SEEN and SIN, the two rooftop bars on the 26th and 27th floors with one of the most beautiful views over the Chao Phraya that Bangkok has to offer. And Benihana, the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant on the third floor of Riverside Plaza, made for an evening of culinary theatre at the water’s edge. The Manohra Dinner Cruise, finally, is an experience we enjoyed in 2024 and have never forgotten.

Breakfast @ The Market

Breakfast at The Market was a celebration every single morning. The restaurant sits on the ground floor of the North Wing, coincidentally directly beneath our suite, with both indoor and outdoor tables along the riverside. On our first morning we chose outside, with the Chao Phraya just a few metres away. A spectacular place to start your day. But because April in Thailand is genuinely seriously hot, we opted for inside on subsequent mornings. And that was equally fine: the space is large and well laid out, with plenty of tables for couples, families and larger groups.

The buffet is enormously extensive with a clear Asian signature. Alongside western classics such as bacon, ham, cheese and egg dishes, you discover influences from the Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Indian cuisines: sushi, miso soup, dim sum, fried rice, green curry, teriyaki chicken and various Indian specialities. For a lighter start there is a healthy corner with quinoa, salads and grain bowls. In the bakery section you will find pandan custard buns, croissants, chocolate rolls, waffles, different types of bread and even gluten-free options.

What always makes us happy are the live stations, and The Market has plenty. A noodle station, a congee station for both sweet and savoury variations, an egg station and even a sushi station. The freshly pressed juices are in a category of their own: pineapple with spinach, apple with beetroot and carrot, ginger and lime or a refreshing passion fruit juice. Ask for fresh mango or passion fruit and it will be arranged with pleasure. And for the little ones: doughnuts, small pizzas, waffles and pancakes.

Sala Lakorn

Of everything we experienced during our stay at Anantara Riverside, an evening at Sala Lakorn was without doubt one of the most delightful surprises. This relatively new concept, opened in November 2025, is not a dinner show in the traditional sense of the word. It is something else entirely: a complete evening experience on the banks of the Chao Phraya, where culture, entertainment and food come together in a way you will not quickly forget. We certainly have not. What was also amusing: during our visit an entire international delegation from the Thai tourism authority was seated in the room. Not surprising, because this is exactly the kind of experience you want to send out into the world.

For well over an hour, song, dance, humour, music, impressive costumes and modern lighting effects combine into a performance that never stops engaging. The story of Siam, ancient Thailand, told through traditional and modern performing arts. Behind the production stands the award-winning team of artist Manop Meejamrat, winner of the prestigious Silpathorn Award for Performing Arts. And you can tell. This looks professional, stylish and lovingly crafted.

Equally impressive was the buffet. The choice is enormous: fresh oysters, crab, mussels, prawns and sashimi, grilled vegetables, pasta, Indian specialities, Japanese dishes and a substantial BBQ corner with spareribs, chicken wings and slow-cooked beef from the grill. At the live cooking stations dishes are prepared à la minute, and the dessert corner with pastries and cakes speaks for itself. We opted for the free-flow option with wine, beer and soft drinks, which only enhanced the atmosphere of the evening. The service was notably good: dishes were replenished quickly and drinks refilled before we had to ask.

Do not expect fine dining from Sala Lakorn. For that you go to Le Du, Nusara or Potong. Sala Lakorn is for those who want an evening that feels unmistakably Thai: accessible, comfortable and genuinely special. Choose a table by the river, let the show carry you and enjoy. We did exactly that and ended the evening with a nightcap at the Elephant Bar. A perfect combination.

Sala Lakorn is open daily from 6 PM to 10 PM, with the show starting at 7 PM.

Longtail River Bar and Lounge

Before heading to Sala Lakorn, we wanted to unwind at Longtail River Bar & Lounge, right on the banks of the Chao Phraya. No loud rooftop or busy cocktail bar, but an open wooden terrace at the head of the hotel’s boat pier, designed in the traditional Lanna style of northern Thailand, where the rhythm of the river sets the tone. Longtail boats, cruise ships and other river vessels glide past while you sit comfortably enjoying your drink. The contrast between old and new Bangkok is nowhere sharper than here at sunset.

On arrival we were welcomed with a small signature mocktail made with butterfly pea and a refreshing Lotus Sense towel. A small gesture, but precisely the kind of detail Anantara excels at.

The Longtail Journey cocktail menu is an ode to the waterways of Bangkok. Eight signature cocktails, each inspired by the river and the life around it. Ilonka chose the River Romance, an elegant combination of Crème de Kyoho, Aperol, elderflower and prosecco. I went for the Canal Secrets, with Bulleit Rye, honey, lime and ginger beer. Later came the fresh Longtail Drift with Ketel One vodka, guava and ume plum syrup and the more mature Moonlit Mooring, in which Japanese whisky, Averna Amaro, Kahlúa and orange bitters create a rich, complex flavour experience. Alongside: tom yum nuts, taro chips and banana chips with paprika flavour. Simple, but perfectly suited to the cocktails.

Elephant Bar

After opening the evening at Longtail River Bar & Lounge and then taking in the spectacle of Sala Lakorn, we wanted to close the night in style at the Elephant Bar. And that was exactly the right choice.

Hidden in the heart of the resort, this lounge feels as though you are stepping into another era. Dark wood tones, soft lighting, comfortable Chesterfield sofas, a pool table and an impressive collection of elephant sculptures, including pieces from the world-famous Elephant Parade project, which also has a small shop in the resort. A touch of Great Gatsby, a touch of gentlemen’s club. The perfect place to catch your breath after the energetic dinner performance of Sala Lakorn.

The back wall is lined with whiskies ranging from Scotch to Japanese, supplemented by rum, gin and cognac. We dove into the signature cocktails: The Zoo, a fresh combination of Matusalem Platino rum, lime and lemonade, and the more complex Ivory, with Prakaan Peated Malt, palm syrup, dry vermouth and orange bitters. Smoky, deep and perfect to sip slowly while we were still talking about our extraordinary evening. Alongside the familiar tom yum nuts and taro chips.

The atmosphere is never rushed. Quiet music in the background, attentive staff and all the time in the world for another drink. Elephant Bar is for those who want to end the evening the way it deserves to be ended. Rewind to Relax.

Trader Vic’s

Trader Vic’s has been at the Chao Phraya since 1993 and is therefore one of the longest-standing residents of Anantara Riverside. And you can see it. This is a place with character, history and an identity you rarely find at newer hotel restaurants.

The concept goes back to Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron, the Californian entrepreneur who co-founded tiki culture in 1934 and gave the world the original Mai Tai. You feel that heritage the moment you step inside: warm wood tones, Polynesian decorations, tiki torches and an atmosphere that floats between an exotic island resort and a classic cocktail bar.

The kitchen is led by the energetic Executive Sous Chef Manuel Martin del Campo Bräuner, quite a mouthful, but just as versatile as the name suggests. Pacific Rim flavours are at the heart of it: Polynesian, Hawaiian, Asian and American come together at one table. From fresh seafood to the famous Hawaiian pork chop, prepared in Bangkok’s only Chinese wood-fired oven of its kind. On Sundays there is the extensive Sunday Brunch with live cooking stations, fresh seafood, sushi and teppanyaki at the water’s edge.

We were particularly fond of the sushi, the cheeses, the lobster, the South American dishes and the grilled specialities. And then there are the desserts. Large pieces of chocolate, pastries and sweet temptations in every form. Leave room for those, seriously.

Manohra Cruise

The Manohra Cruise is one of the most exceptional experiences Anantara Riverside Bangkok has to offer, and that is saying something. On board a beautifully restored antique rice barge you sail for two hours along the Chao Phraya past iconic landmarks including Wat Arun, the Grand Palace and the Memorial Bridge, while enjoying a multi-course menu of refined Thai dishes. Sustainability and Ethics

Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort carries sustainability not as a marketing term but as a genuine conviction. The resort has been awarded the Green Growth 2050 Platinum Certification, the highest possible distinction within this globally recognised sustainability framework for the travel and tourism sector. The certification requires a rigorous independent audit of more than 400 indicators covering environmental, socio-economic and cultural sustainability.
