Wat Thammikarat, Ayutthaya: Lion Chedi & Rooster Statues
Located near Wat Phra Si Sanphet, this lesser-visited temple features lion statues guarding a large chedi and a unique collection of rooster statues — symbols of King Naresuan. Wat Thammikarat is believed to predate Ayutthaya’s founding, though it was later expanded during the kingdom’s rise. The ruined chedi sits on a platform surrounded by singha (mythical lion figures), which were meant to protect the temple. The modern viharn on-site is still used for worship and houses a large bronze Buddha. It’s a great stop for those looking to explore beyond the more touristy temples.
