Wat Phanan Choeng, Ayutthaya: Ancient Temple with 19m Golden Buddha
Wat Phanan Choeng is one of Ayutthaya’s oldest and most spiritually significant temples. It predates the city’s official founding and houses a revered 19-meter-tall golden seated Buddha named Luang Pho Tho, built in 1324. The temple remains very active with local worshippers and is a favorite for Thai-Chinese devotees. Located by the Pa Sak River, it was historically important for foreign traders. The atmosphere inside the viharn is powerful, filled with incense, chanting, and devotion. The temple also features Chinese shrines and intricate murals, making it a richly layered cultural experience.
